
Hunter Vaughn made two free throws with two seconds left as No. 5 North Douglas outlasted No. 4 Sherman 50-48 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 1A boys basketball tournament Thursday at Baker High School.
With the win, the Warriors (25-3) advance to the semifinals, where they were eliminated the last two seasons. They will play No. 1 Mannahouse Academy on Friday.
North Douglas went back and forth all game against the Huskies (23-6), who were making their first tournament appearance in six years. Sherman forced overtime when Isaiah Riggs hit a three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation, tying the game at 46-46.
In overtime, Jamie Phelps scored to put the Huskies ahead 48-46. Vaughn made a layup to tie 48-48 with 2:18 remaining.
North Douglas worked the clock down for the final shot, and Vaughn drew a foul on Riggs with two seconds left, the fifth foul on Riggs. Vaughn made both free throws, and Sherman's Josh Ward fired up a desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer that missed.
Jayden Montgomery had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Vaughn had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead North Douglas, which overcame 29.1-percent shooting (16 for 55).
For Sherman, Riggs shot 12 of 20 from the field and finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Phelps added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies, who shot 35.0 percent (21 for 60).
No. 1 Mannahouse Academy 64, No. 8 Dufur 28: The top-seeded Lions (27-3) bolted to a 20-6 lead and routed the Rangers (22-7). Mannahouse Academy, a 2A semifinalist last year, has reached the final four in its return to 1A.
Mattias Tonning shot 9 of 16 from the field and scored 22 points to lead the Lions. Nolan Schweiss had 12 points, Joshua Louka had 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks and Caleb Dickinson added nine points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Jacob Kent had seven points and six rebounds for Dufur. The Rangers shot 26.3 percent (10 for 38) from the field and committed 23 turnovers to nine for Mannahouse Academy.
No. 6 Country Christian 91, No. 3 Nixyaawii 83 (OT): The Cougars (22-7) ended the game on a 10-1 run to claim their first semifinal berth since winning the title in 2015.
Tyson Smith scored 37 points, shooting 11 of 26 from the field, including 7 of 17 from three-point range, to lead Country Christian. Ryan Gordon had 14 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks and Dany Schneider had 14 points for the Cougars.
Rylen Bronson (25 points), Symon Picard (18 points, eight rebounds) and Weptas Brockie (18 points, nine rebounds) paced the Golden Eagles (24-4), last year's runner-up.
Brockie hit a three-pointer to pull Nixyaawii even at 78-78 with 14 seconds left in regulation. Both teams had chances to take the lead before overtime, but Gordon missed two free throws with three seconds remaining, and after a Nixyaawii timeout, Bronson missed three free throws with two seconds to go.
Smith made a three-pointer and four free throws in overtime as Country Christian seized control.
No. 2 Crane 84, No. 10 Days Creek 37: The three-time reigning champion Mustangs (28-0) shot 59.3 percent (35 for 59), hitting 10 of 20 from three-point range, to defeat the Wolves (20-8).
Crane's Cody Siegner, a 6-foot-7 senior post, made 14 of 19 shots and finished with 31 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Casse Roozeboom had 20 points, making 4 of 5 three-point attempts, and Josh Zander added 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in the win.
Aiden Denson made three three-pointers and had 13 points and five rebounds for Days Creek.
Crane extended its winning streak to 55, within one of the state record of 56, held by Oakland (1999-2001).
