Shout outs for shutouts
Double zeroes caught my eye after Friday’s action across the OSAA.
Marshfield defeated Cottage Grove / Yoncalla in a double header, 7-0 and 8-0.
La Pine defeated Pleasant Hill, 10-0 and 4-0.
Sisters beat Creswell, 2-0 and 1-0.
That wasn’t all, however.
Knappa defeated Vernonia / Jewell, 10-0 and 13-0.
Cascade Christian defeated Rogue River, 14-0 and 10-0.
Douglas upended Siuslaw / Mapleton, 14-0 and 10-0.
Six doubleheaders. Twelve (12) shutouts. That has to be some kind of record!
Marshfield won Game 1 of its twin bill with host Cottage Grove / Yoncalla thanks to a combined no-hitter from Wyatt Petley and Logan Shipman. Pirate outfielders took the mound for the second game and blanked the Lions on two hits. Senior Brayden Gunn got the win, while freshman Brandon Wendelin did not allow a baserunner and fanned four through two perfect innings.
“It is extremely tough to take a double header against a league opponent, especially on the road,” said Marshfield head coach Toby Ridenour. “The boys really bought into attacking the strike zone and trusting their defense. The did not try to get too pretty on the mound or do too much.”
La Pine’s sweep of Pleasant Hill, a team with a similar resume; was a combination of quality pitching, good situational hitting, and great defense,” said Hawk head coach Aaron Flack.
In the first game, Dylan Newton retired the first six batters he faced and Russo Wrightman got La Pine out of a third-inning jam, with help from great defense at third from Shaye Johnson. Wrightman went the rest of the way and Riley Flack’s two-run double in the last of the fifth walked it off. Game 2 saw Elijah Sparrow toss a gem for the Hawks. Sparrow gave up just one hit and whiffed 12 before the game was called after six due to darkness.
Sisters had great pitching and great defense on Friday and had to, because the offense managed just three runs against Creswell.
Landen Scott and Trent Gordon hurled complete games for Sisters.
“Both did a great job of throwing strikes and letting the defense make plays behind them,” said Sisters coach Matt Hilgers. “We had three or four kids on the defensive side make some great plays on balls that were hit hard or balls that could have ended up going for extra bases. If you can limit mistakes it helps give you a chance to win. For the day we had two walks and one error and, with our arms, that gives us a chance to win most games. We have done a good job thus far of limiting the free passes and we hope to continue that.”
“Double headers are extremely challenging for high school kids,” Hilgers added. “It’s not easy to maintain focus and keep a baseball mindset for 14 innings of baseball and warm-ups. I don't feel that we do anything different or more special than other teams. We really just focus on Game 1 and try to play our best baseball and then try to get a reset between games and get after in Game 2.”
Cascade Christian had the easiest time of those firing double blanks, but the double digit run totals in each game versus Rogue River were unnecessary. That’s because Challenger pitchers threw combined no-hitters in each game!
Grady Sickle and Seth Scaglione combined for a no hitter in Game 1, striking out seven in the five-inning game. CJ Bonner and Andy Alvarez combined for the no hitter in Game 2, striking out 10 and only walking one. Cascade Christian now has four no hitters on the year.
It should be noted that the Challengers allowed only one hit in Tuesday’s series-opening win!
Cascade Christian expects to get more mound help soon, as freshman Blake Patereau has been out for the last two weeks with a minor injury. He is 3-0 with one save, an ERA of 0.27 and has 27 Ks over 25.2 innings.
Knappa’s double header sweep started with a masterful performance from Oliver Stevens, who recorded 13 of the Loggers’ 15 outs by strike out. This, after facing six and fanning six in Tuesday’s win! In Game 2, Jude Miller picked up his first career pitching win by throwing three innings of the five inning shutout.
“Double headers are always a physical and mental challenge for a team,” Knappa coach Jeff Miller said. “We try to focus on pitching efficiency and having all eligible pitchers prepared during the week in order to get through double headers. Double headers have always been a part of our league (NWL) and it is something we talk about and prepare for during the early weeks of practice and the preseason schedule.”
As if all the shutouts weren’t impressive enough…
…there were several “almosts,” as well.
Baker / Powder Valley won two from Ontario, 11-1 and 11-1.
Pendleton / Nixyaawii bested La Grande, 11-2 and 16-2.
South Umpqua thumped Sutherlin, 16-1 and 15-3.
Brookings-Harbor upended St. Mary’s of Medford, 18-0 and 12-1.
Culver took down Mohawk, 16-1 and 13-0.
And Lost River got by Glendale, 18-1 and 13-2.
Culver allowed just one hit over 10 innings in its double header win. Senior Cole Roff threw a five-inning no hitter in Game 2, while senior Carlos Fernandez allowed just one hit over five frames in the first game.
“Double Headers have been challenging for us,” Culver coach Kyle Kuust admitted. “Oftentimes, it is tough for teenagers to remain focused for extended periods of time, especially when you tack on three-hour bus trips one way. We've talked a lot about how the ‘little things’ matter. We've fallen victim to some mental mistakes that become extremely costly for us in double headers. We talk a lot about positive energy, and positive responses to failure in these moments to hopefully encourage engagement. Our kids are fantastic, and they've done a great job moving forward!”
News & notes
Mark Wiepert, the record-setting senior QB for Wilsonville, who had been committed to Oregon State as a baseball catcher, has flipped to the University of Oregon for football.

After dropping Game 1of a double header, 7-6, on Friday, Irrigon came back to defeat St. Paul, 12-2, handing the Buckaroos only their second loss on the year.
“It was a great win for us,” said coach Fredy Vera. “I thought we could’ve taken both games but left the tying and winning run on second & third. It was a huge confidence booster, beating one of the best teams in the state.”
“Our pitching has been solid for us so far this year, added Vera, whose team is now 11-5 after a 2-3 start. “If we continue to pitch well and limit errors. I believe we can compete with anybody and hope to make a run at state. We have some huge league games coming up that will tell us a lot about our team.”
***
St. Paul dropped its second game in a row yesterday when Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian opened the first of a three-game series with a 2-0 win. Tyson Smith threw a complete-game one-hitter for the Cougars, fanning 11.
Smith, a junior right hander, now has 345 career strike outs, which places him tenth on the all-time list in Oregon. Smith could move into fifth place all-time before the season is over, but the state record of 564, set by John Forrester of Umpqua Valley Christian from 2011 through 2014, appears to be out of reach.

Sophomore 3B Grae Wells had a big game last week in Ida B. Wells’ win over Roosevelt. He went 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs. The Guardians have had players put up monster games all season, notably senior CF Jackson Poole, who scored five runs, one shy of the school record, in a 10-4 win over Tualatin on April 8. In the same game, senior SS Cam Hammer went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
***
Sprague senior RHP Jace Dalton, who is uncommitted, has thrown three complete-game shutouts this year, over Sherwood, West Salem and California power Servite. He also has beaten Lakeridge, 2-1. That’s some serious pitching! Dalton is 4-0 on the season with a 1.00 ERA!
