A look at Friday’s quarterfinal playoff baseball games in all classifications in the OSAA / OnPoint Community Credit Union State Championships. We will update this story as results roll in.

6A

No. 9 Grant 12, No. 1 South Salem 0 (5 innings) – Kaeden Cruse hit a three-run homer in the first, as part of a six-RBI night, and Cooper Yudhishthu was brilliant on the mound for the Generals, who knocked off the previously-unbeaten Saxons on the road.

No. 5 Jesuit 13, No. 4 Sherwood 0 (5 innings) – Trey Cleeland put Jesuit on top in the second with a home run, then singled in the third and fourth innings as part of a 13-hit attack in the impressive Crusader win. A six-run third put the game away for Jesuit, which got a strong start from Johnny Ingalls. Kainoa Santiago matched Cleeland with three hits, including a two-run single in the third.

No. 11 Sunset 6, No. 3 Central Catholic 4 -- The tandem of Will Slater and Dakota Chun combined to hold the explosive Rams to four runs on six hits in Sunset’s road win. Sunset benefited by an error in the infield with two outs to score three unearned runs in the first inning. The Apollos played small ball in the fourth to plate two more runs then added one more in the fifth after Central Catholic had scored three to make it close. Gavin Riley drove in two for Sunset, which got four strong innings in relief from Chun, the winning pitcher.

No. 7 McMinnville 5, No. 18 South Medford 4 (8 innings) – Tyler Brummitt’s two-out single down the third base line in the bottom of the eighth walked it off for the Grizzlies. South Medford, which had won its previous two playoff games with rallies, trailed 4-2 heading to the top of the seventh and scored two to tie the game. Brayden Mix was the winning pitcher for McMinnville, with 1.2 innings of relief. Brummitt, Cam Hyder, Aaron Rolfe and Bryce Wilson each had two hits for the victors.

No. 1 Wilsonville 4, No. 8 Corvallis 3 – Wade Hagey launched a ball over the right fielder’s head in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Wildcats stay unbeaten with the walk off win in a game in which they only had three hits. Junior Grady Weiss was huge on the ump for the home team, tossing 4.1 innings and striking out six. .

No. 5 Summit 9, No. 13 Dallas 6 – Alex Via threw four scoreless innings for the Storm, whose offense produced nine runs on 10 hits.

No. 3 Canby 14, No. 6 La Salle Prep 10 – Canby jumped to an 11-1 lead after two innings, but LSP clawed to within 11-7 going into the bottom of the fifth, when Canby scored three runs to make the lead a more comfortable seven. The Falcons scored three in the top of the next frame to make things much tighter but could get no closer than four runs. Colby Herren had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Canby offense. Dylan Nelson also had two hits. Max Bishop had two hits and drove in five for La Salle Prep.

No. 2 Thurston 16, No. 10 West Albany 7 – Grady Saunders had a grand slam, Kyle Miller drove in three and Brock Johnson and David MacDonald combined to drive in four more in the comfortable win for the two-time defending champions. Kaden Martirano homered and drove in four in the loss for West Albany.

No. 1 Marist Catholic 13, No. 8 Molalla 3 (6 innings)  -- Marist Catholic unleashed a 15-hit attack and scored in all six inning to overwhelm Molalla. Jalen Smith and Gianni Lombardi collected three hits for the Spartans and Cash Andrus, Tanner Mullens, Niko Leyba and Stephen Riley had two apiece. Lombardi, Andrus, Mullens and Riley drove in two runs apiece. Lombardi was the winning pitcher, going all six while allowing just two hits.

No. 5 Henley 2, No. 4 Newport 0 -- Mark Carpenter went 6.2 innings for the Hornets and Corbin Hamilton went 3ofor-3 with an RBI and got the final out on the mound. Henley scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and made then stand up. Carpenter allowed only three hits and struck out 10.

No. 3 Scappoose 7, No. 6 Philomath 6 – The two-time defending champions staked Philomath to a one-run lead, but scored in each of the first four innings to build a 7-1 lead. Riley DuBois, Will Kessi and Nolan Lennox led the offensive charge for Scappoose. Philomath rallied in the six and the seventh, scoring three in the six and two in the seventh, and were still threatening with two on and two outs, when Kessi induced a fly ball to right fielder Brandon Neilson to end the game.  

No. 7 Pendleton / Nixyaawii 9, No. 2 Junction City 6 – Junction City led in this one, 3-1, aided by a Josh Berry homer; before Keegan Kline’s home run in the top of the fifth helped the Buckaroos knot the game at 3-3. The teams traded runs over the next two innings, before Pendleton exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to break the game open. Singles from Colson Primus, Mason Strong and Art Hill sparked the decisive rally. 


3A

No. 1 Blanchet Catholic 6, No. 8 Burns / Crane 1 -- Trailing 1-0 after 5 1/2 innings, the top-seeded Cavaliers struck for six, with Dylan Cuff driving in three and Drew Bartels plating two. That was more than enough for pitcher Carson McNally, who went the distance, striking out five.

No. 4 Taft 7, No. 5 Sisters 0 – Zack Hankins struck out 13 over five innings of work, giving up just one hit; and Ezra James went the final two, giving up no hits while fanning four; in Taft’s big win. The Tigers had 11 hits on the day, led by James, who was 3-for-3; and Alejandro Hernandez, who had two doubles and three RBIs.

No. 3 Warrenton 6, No. 6 North Valley 4 – Talon McGrorty threw 6.2 innings for the defending state champions and Wyatt Bond’s two-RBI single with two outs in the fifth made the difference for the Warriors. Nolan Munoz had two hits for North Valley, including a two-run homer in the fourth. Landon Allison also had two hits and went the distance on the mound for North Valley, but was hurt by six errors made behind him.

No. 2 Cascade Christian 6, No. 7 South Umpqua 5 – South Umpqua scored three in the top of the first and two more in the sixth to match Cascade Christian’s five runs. The Challengers added one more in the bottom of the sixth, when Grady Sickler led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Carson Willard. CJ Bonner came on in relief of freshman Andy Alvarez, who pitched credibly; and the senior slammed the door shut on Cascade Christian’s win. Bryson Walker also had a good day for the Challengers, going 3-for-3 from the leadoff spot.


2A/1A

No. 1 Umpqua Valley Christian 16, No. 8 Irrigon 0 (5 innings) – Ty Hellenthal tossed a five-inning no-hitter and Caleb York went 3-for-3 with a triple and eight RBIs in the win for the defending state champions.

No. 4 Knappa 8, No. 5 Myrtle Point / Pacific 7 – Knappa trailed 6-0 after and was still down, 7-6, in the seventh before scoring two to win in come-from-behind fashion. Gavin Barendse executed a perfect safety squeeze to score Blake Miller with the winning run. Braxton Hill earned the victory on the mound for the Loggers after coming on in the middle of the seventh inning and striking out two.

No. 19 Portland Christian 4, No. 6 Reedsport 1 – Joseph Diesel threw six innings of one-hit ball for the Royals, the highest seed remaining in contention in any classification. Six different players had hits for PC in what coach Kyle Wilson said was an all-around team effort at the plate in support of Diesel, who was dominant.

No. 2 Kennedy 11, No. 7 Monroe / Alsea 4 – Kennedy rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win behind Henry Beyer, who pitched into the seventh for the Trojans. Gia Vaquera had three RBIs, Kody Graves was 3-for-3 and Jake Beyer smashed a two-run triple for the victors. Jose Flores had two hits and two RBIs in the loss for Monroe.
