No. 6 Silverton raced to a two-goal lead, then leaned on its defense to hold off No. 11 Mountain View 2-1 in the first round of the 5A girls soccer playoffs Wednesday.

The host Foxes led 2-0 in the first 20 minutes on goals by junior Allie Mansur and sophomore Marley Wertz, both assisted by junior Maddie Walter.

"Our coach told us to come out strong and we came out strong, set the pace, and that's exactly what we did," Mansur said. "We had some slow parts in the second half, but thankfully with that first half we were able to have some leisure with the second half."

Silverton (14-0-1) advances to play at No. 3 Caldera (12-2-2) in a Saturday quarterfinal.

"Caldera is hard, but the better the teams, the better we play," Mansur said. "Our coaches are good at preparing us, and there is no way someone's getting by our defense."

Mountain View (6-6-3) made it 2-1 in the 70th minute on a goal by senior Carmen Roberts, only the fourth goal allowed this season by Silverton.

"We know how much potential our team has, and at that point when they scored, we knew we had to come in and clutch up and lock in and get it out of there,” Foxes senior defender Simone Busch said.

“No matter what, we had to clear it out and do anything at this point because we know we can make it to the state championship. We want to prove how good Silverton soccer is and break some more records at our school.”

Silverton survived some tense moments down the stretch to seal the win.

"We've always known that the defense was back there, but this game really showed and highlighted their skills and showed what they can do," senior goalkeeper Ella Lulich said.
