Cavaliers complete regular season with 15 shutouts

Thurston baseball has won 50 league games since its last league loss
Thurston baseball has won 50 league games since its last league loss

At least every other week during the spring season, we’ll talk some Oregon high school baseball. This is the place!

Blank-chet Catholic

Blanchet Catholic closed a 25-1 regular season yesterday with an 11-1 win over Sisters, a 20-win team competing one classification larger in 3A.

That the Cavaliers didn’t shut out the Outlaws may have come as a surprise. Of Blanchet’s 25 wins, 15 of them have come without the team’s hurlers allowing so much as a run. The Cavaliers’ 15 shutouts are fourth most all-time, trailing record setter Kennedy by four. The Trojans set the all-time mark last year.

“Our strength is our pitching,” said head coach David Winstead.

Indeed, over 26 games, Blanchet has yielded just 44 runs, only nine since April 2. Four pitchers have earned run averages less than one, led by junior Drew Bartels, who has yet to yield a run over 23 innings pitched. Carson McNally, Josh Mosar and Noah Hanock all have sparkling sub-1.00 ERAs, with senior Landon Gerig not far behind at 1.50.

And lest you think that Blanchet Catholic is just beating up on small schools, know that the Cavaliers, in addition to yesterday’s win over Sisters, has beaten two 4A schools, The Dalles (20-7) and Cascade plus three out-of-state schools that would be 6A-sized in Oregon, one, Apollo of Arizona, that is 23-9.

Logging the wins

After an 0-4 start to the season, Knappa, another top 2A/1A school, has run off nineteen consecutive victories. The Loggers have already clinched their 14th consecutive NWL championship.

“This senior class has lost one league game in their career and is striving to finish another perfect league season,” noted coach Jeff Miller. “The Loggers have lost only three times in league play in the past ten years.”

Two of those three losses have been to Nestucca, the team Knappa faces off against in a doubleheader today to close the regular season.

Thurston for victories

Thurston has won six consecutive Midwestern league titles and is on a 50-game league unbeaten streak with one game left versus Springfield tomorrow. The last league loss for the Colts came March 19, 2022 versus Willamette.

Of course, it’s not like Thurston has done much losing to anyone since that Willamette loss. The Colts record against all opponents from March 19, 2022 to today is 76-8.

News & notes

Scappoose has clinched a second consecutive 12-0 season in the Cowapa League. The last two wins for the defending 4A state champions, over Astoria, were anything but easy. On Friday, Scappoose won, 3-2, behind stellar pitching from Miles Harrison and Kallen Mattila. The team then prevailed, 6-5, on the road on Monday. Astoria mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but Scappoose centerfielder Leland Boswell threw out the potential tying run at third base to quell the rally.

***

The Dalles pulled out the Tri-Valley League title with a 2-0 win at Estacada on Friday. Senior left hander Sam Shaver tossed the complete game one-hitter with 18 strike outs!

***

Klamath Union / Crosspoint Christian has won only six games this season, but the Pels had reason to smile last Thursday when sophomore P.J. Safford went 6.1 innings, allowing only one earned run while fanning 13 and walking none in a 6-4 loss to Mazama.

STATS CATEGORIES

The idea for our 2024 stats categories is to recognize only those players achieving at the highest levels in the state of Oregon. They are not designed to produce massive, labor-intensive lists.

Any varsity baseball coach wanting to add someone to a list may email [email protected], list the category and supply the name of a player using the specific format for the category.

Going going gone goodbye!

Everyone digs the long ball.

Here, we will recognize those Oregonians who have gone yard six or more times so far this season. We will add to it in subsequent Baseball Notebooks as coaches tell us about the players who are dinger ringers.
