Gutted by graduation, Sherwood's football team had to forge a different identity than its 2023 semifinalist, which recorded eight shutouts, including seven in a row.

The No. 9 Bowmen have gone through some growing pains, but they believe they have come into their own after wrapping up their fourth consecutive 6A Pacific Conference title with a 55-14 win at Newberg on Thursday.

Sherwood (7-2, 4-0) rushed for 413 yards – getting 241 yards and five touchdowns from senior Wilson Medina – and held the Tigers (4-5, 3-1) to 150 total yards in extending its conference winning streak to 22.

Coach Mark Gribble said his team has “completely different strengths” than a year ago.

“Last year's team was a defensive juggernaut,” he said. “This year's team, although successful on defense, we feel like we have more explosiveness on offense. Early on in the season, we were still trying to figure out what our signature was. We were trying to get out from the shadow of last year's team being so successful, and kind of create our own success.”

The Bowmen have won six in a row since losing to No. 3 West Linn 35-0 and No. 7 Tualatin 55-35 in nonleague games.

“Both of those games, we competed well but we were young, still trying to find that identity,” Gribble said. “We made some very costly mistakes. We feel like we've matured as a team and really learned from those opportunities. Against teams like that, you've got to be able to finish your drives.”

The 6-1, 210-pound Medina has rushed for a 6A-leading 1,717 yards and 27 touchdowns. He showed his elusiveness against Newberg on an 88-yard touchdown run in which he broke several tackles, put his hand on the ground, reversed field and won a race to the end zone.

“He just refused to be tackled,” Gribble said. “He's got great natural instincts that you can't coach. He's got that third and fourth gear that most kids don't have.”

Senior right tackle Junior Lualaupeaalu (6-4, 320), a fourth-year starter, leads an offensive line that includes junior tackle Jack Wilson, senior guard Kyle Eaton, junior guard Isaac Bean and junior center Walter Dahme. The unit flashed its potential in the summer when it won the Metro Lineman Challenge.

“They really came together that week,” Gribble said.

The defense has held five of its last six opponents to 14 points or fewer. Dahme has been a force on the defensive line, and junior outside linebacker and safety Talen Gorretta – who on Thursday scored on a 72-yard interception return and a 17-yard run – has been the team's most impactful defensive player, according to Gribble.

Nelson makes the cut

At No. 11 in the OSAA 6A power rankings, Nelson entered Friday's rivalry game against Clackamas teetering on the edge of making the 12-team Open playoff bracket.

The Hawks eliminated any possibility of slipping out of the top 12 with a convincing 37-7 home win over the Cavaliers that secured second place in the Mt. Hood Conference.

The result gives Nelson (7-2, 6-1) the No. 10 playoff seed and a first-round date at seventh-seeded Sherwood. Clackamas (6-3, 5-2), which began the night at No. 8 in the power rankings, slipped to the No. 11 seed and will visit No. 6 Sprague in the first round.

“We just want to play competitive, important, meaningful football in November,” Hawks coach Aaron Hazel said. “We want to be in the discussion. When you're in the top 12, I definitely feel like you're earning respect from the other people in the state, that you belong.”

Nelson has done much of its damage this season with the arm of senior quarterback Avirey Durdahl, but under wet and windy conditions Friday, the Hawks stuck to their ground game, churning out 276 rushing yards. Junior Corbin Croslin had 17 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way.

“In a game like that, when we're having trouble throwing the ball, we were able to run effectively,” Hazel said. “That's helping us a ton. We're having success in different aspects of offense. We're able to do whatever the defense is not taking away.”

Durdahl showed he can be a dual threat by rushing for 67 yards on nine carries.

“It was nice for him to do that,” Hazel said. “We're in the spread, now all of the sudden we've got two backs in the backfield, and you've got to account for both of those guys.”

Senior Noah Boria returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown and returned a kickoff 55 yards, setting up another score. He also had an 11-yard touchdown catch.

Senior punter Brody Alcorn called his own number and ran 26 yards for a first down, helping flip the momentum in the second quarter. Junior Ethan Azorr converted all five of his extra-point attempts, making him 41 of his last 42.

The Hawks held Clackamas to 71 total yards. Hazel said the secondary play of Boria and junior Chaz Katoanga has been key.

“Our back end is really limiting big plays and making teams earn stuff,” Hazel said. “We're playing really, really fast and physical.”

Henley prevails in mud fight

Reigning 4A champion Henley enters the postseason on a high note after beating rival Mazama 40-8 in a game that decided the Special District 4 title.

Junior quarterback Joseph Janney rushed for 116 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries and junior Trapper Cundall ran for 91 yards and one score on nine carries to lead the No. 2 Hornets (8-1, 5-0) past the No. 7 Vikings (5-4, 4-1) in the latest edition of the South Side Series rivalry.

Henley got a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown by senior Mark Carpenter to start the scoring and increased the lead to 26-0 at half. Offense was limited – Henley had a 215-171 edge in total yards – as the teams played in a mud bog.

“For the conditions, I thought we played pretty well,” Hornets coach Matt Green said. “It was pretty sloppy. They had a lot of mishaps, and we just capitalized on all of them.”

Janney continues to lead the way for Henley. He entered the game with 23 touchdown passes, but adjusted to the conditions and hurt Mazama with his running ability.

“He's a great leader, great competitor for us,” Green said. “He just steps up. Whenever we need a big play, he's there to either throw one or run one for us.”

Henley, which has won six in a row since losing to 5A Summit 24-6, has found a groove in recent weeks as its young offensive line has gelled, according to Green. The Hornets start sophomore center Thunder Kirk, junior guards Theron Tyler and Cooper Mathis, junior tackle Jantz Kahl Jr. and sophomore tackle Nathan Billy.

“It's been nice to see the young guys come together,” Green said. “We had to make some changes on the line, and I think we finally gound a good five guys that play well together.”

The Hornets, who defeated top-ranked Marist Catholic 19-16 in their second game, are eager to defend their title. They beat Marist Catholic in last year's state final.

“A lot of these kids played in that game last year, so I think not being nervous of the big games in big for us,” Green said.

Mazama is adjusting to the loss of standout senior running back Kris Baldwin, who did not play Friday after suffering a knee injury in Week 8 against Ashland. Baldwin has rushed for 1,197 yards this season.

“They were a little shell-shocked with losing Baldwin, and the weather didn't help them out any,” Green said.

Colton back on top

After making the 2A semifinals in 2022, Colton slipped to 2-7 last year.

But it didn't take long for the Vikings to right the ship. Playing for the Special District 2 title Friday, No. 7 Colton turned back No. 2 Gervais 22-16, handing the visiting Cougars their first loss of the season.

"It has taken some time for the players and coaches to refocus to a winning mindset and culture," first-year coach Brian Faulhaber said. "A lot of the growth and change had more to do with a mental shift than a physical shift."

Against Gervais, senior Benjamin Imdieke rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and senior Wyatt Holliday threw a four-yard touchdown pass to junior Logan Roberts. The Vikings (7-2, 3-0) did it against a Gervais defense that had allowed a 2A-low 34 points all season, recording five shutouts.

In avenging a 69-28 loss to Gervais last year, Colton extended its winning streak to six games. The Vikings have been on a roll since back-to-back losses to undefeated teams, No. 3 Heppner and No. 4 Culver.

"Since those two losses, we have shifted some players around position-wise and it has led to our success," Faulhaber said. "If we hadn't played those tough games in the beginning, we might not have seen how good we possibly could be."

Imdieke scored on runs of 60 and three yards on Colton's first two possessions as the Vikings opened a 16-0 lead. Gervais (7-1, 2-1) made it 16-8 in the third quarter on an eight-yard touchdown run by junior Johnny Mariano.

Holliday connected with Roberts to expand the lead to 22-8 early in the fourth quarter. Gervais pulled within 22-16 with 7:05 left on a 44-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Frank Ojeda to junior Ben Cam, and after a defensive stop, the Cougars got the ball back inside their 20-yard line with 6:03 on the clock.

On fourth down at the Gervais 35, Colton senior Jacob Bell broke up a pass, and the Vikings ran out the clock to seal the win.

"We knew it was going to be a pass, so we knew we had to play deep and had to play back, and it worked out well," Bell said. "I stayed on the guy, I was faster than him and I think it worked out. I saw that ball coming. We didn't need a pick. It was good."

The Colton defense was opportunistic, getting interceptions from Imdieke and sophomore Brady Casten and a fumble recovery from junior Malachi Jensen.

Imdieke said the Vikings struggled at times with taking down the 215-pound Mariano, who rushed for 170 yards on 25 carries.

“We made a couple of adjustments and figured out what their plays were,” Imdieke said. “That was probably the toughest game we've played yet. It took everything out of us to stop them.”

Imdieke said the win gives Colton a jolt of confidence.

“Last year, we had a team with really low confidence,” he said. “We got the same kids this year, with new coaches and staff, and I think we're all tighter as a family. I think that's going to be the biggest benefit going forward in the season."

Boyer retires

It's been 45 years since Bob Boyer began playing youth football in Beaverton. He went on to play high school football at Beaverton and spend 35 seasons on the Beavers coaching staff, the last 22 as head coach.

But Friday's 41-0 home loss to No. 8 Mountainside marked the end of a long football journey for Boyer, who has stepped down as the team's coach.

“I think it's time for a younger and more energetic guy to take over,” said Boyer, a 1985 Beaverton graduate. “There's just some things I need to do for myself. I've loved every minute of everything I've done, but I think it's time.”

Boyer joined the Beaverton staff in 1990 after a college career at Portland State, where he played defensive tackle. He assisted Don McCarty for one season and Faustin Riley for 12 seasons, helping guide the Beavers to the 1999 state title.

After taking over as head coach in 2003, he compiled a record of 117-107, including 2-7 this season. Under Boyer, the Beavers reached the state semifinals in 2004 and 2008 and the quarterfinals in 2003, 2015 and 2016.

For years, Beaverton was a force in the tough Metro League. But the opening of three high schools in the district – Westview (1994), Southridge (1999) and Mountainside (2018) – skewed the school's demographics and gradually chipped away at Beaverton's base of athletes.

It has hit particularly hard in recent years. The Beavers are 9-33 in the last five seasons.

“We just haven't had numbers,” Boyer said. “When the demographics started to change, if I worried about my record, maybe I wouldn't have stayed. But I felt like that's where I needed to be, and I really like being there. I just love the community, love the school. It's just been the right thing to do.”

Boyer's life has revolved around the high school. He met his wife, Jana, as a student there. Years later, he proposed to Jana at her old locker, which he decorated for the occasion. Their children, son Ryland and daughter Celia, graduated from Beaverton.

Boyer has taught at Beaverton since 1994, first in special education, now in PE.

“When I finally retire from teaching and I'm done with everything, I don't know what I'm going to do with my wardrobe. It's all black, white, orange and gray,” Boyer said. “For me, it's a pretty special place. It's where I grew up. My brothers went there.”

Boyer has coached the last two seasons with Ryland, the team's line coach.

“It's been amazing an amazing experience,” Boyer said.
