Sandy RHP Matt Kosderka was one of four Pioneers hurlers to combine for THREE consecutive no hitters last week

Three of a kind

Sandy outscored Reynolds, 43-0, in three wins last week. That wasn’t the best part for the Pioneers, however. Sandy not only yielded zero runs for the week, it also gave up ZERO hits!

In Tuesday’s 21-0 win, juniors Billy Lucas (4 IP; 9 Ks) and Vaden Priest (1IP; 3 Ks) combined on a five-inning no no.

In Thursday’s six-inning 12-0 win, junior Matt Kosderka went the distance, fanning 12 while giving up just one base on balls.

On Friday, a 10-0 five-inning win, sophomore Max Green went five hitless, walking three while striking out 11.

This may be the first time in Oregon HS history that a team has won three straight games versus a common opponent all by no-hitter.

Dealing

Once again, there were several other notable pitching performances last week.

Yesterday, Sherwood sophomore Connor Parry threw the first reported seven-inning perfect game of 2023. The righty shut out Canby, 3-0, and fanned 13 in the win.

Regis sophomore RHP Bryson Nygren last Friday struck out 18 in a six-inning no-hitter versus Santiam.

Canby senior Logan Robinson threw a complete game that same Friday versus La Salle, punching out 17.

North Medford senior Trey Newmann threw into the ninth inning and got the win on Saturday versus rival South Medford. In 8.1 innings of work, Newmann did not allow a hit, struck out 16 and walked three in the 2-0 decision.

Cascade Christian senior righty Owen Thompson lost a no-hit bid last Thursday with two outs in the seventh. He struck out 16 in the 10-0 win, then struck out 10 and gave up just three hits in a Tuesday win over Glide. Thompson has had a great start to league play. In his four Far West League starts, all wins, he has gone 23.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits with 49 Ks.

Unbeatens

Last week, we were down to three unbeaten teams in the state of Oregon. Did all remain unblemished another week?

You bet they did!

4A No. 1 Gladstone twice doubled up The Dalles then had a game this week versus Estacada canceled. The Dalles, incidentally, won only four games in 5A a year ago, but is 8-6 to start the year in 4A.

2A/1A No. 1 Kennedy improved to 14-0 with four wins this week by a combined 50-1 score.

2A/1A St. Paul is now 9-0 after a close win over Western Christian last Thursday and a 20-3 decision over Colton this week.

Looking at schedules for the next week, it appears we may be looking at another stretch of wins for our trio of unbeaten.

News and notes…

Cascade Christian slugger Triston Wallace had a big night on Tuesday, going 5-for-8 with 3 RBIs and 3 doubles in a double header sweep of Glide.

The University of Washington this week primed Oregon’s deep baseball poll by securing commitments from two youngsters, sophomore INF Will Goodman of Bend and freshman INF Sawyer Nelson of South Salem. Check out all 84 reported college commitments at the end of this Notebook.
