
PENDLETON — Caitlyn Michalek had 20 points, including four three-pointers, as Bandon stunned No. 1 Stanfield 43-39 in the quarterfinals of the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 2A tournament Thursday at Pendleton High School.
“I knew if we played well, we’d have a chance,” Bandon coach Jordan Sammons said. “We knew it would be a battle. We had to give our best.”
Bandon (21-7) will play Salem Academy at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals, while Stanfield (21-6) will take on East Linn Christian at 9 a.m. in the consolation semifinals.
Stanfield saw its seven-game win streak come to an end with the loss.
“Bandon was physical and we didn’t didn’t match that physicality,” Stanfield coach Dan Sharp said. “We knew they were super scrappy and have some good kids. We just weren’t quite as composed as we should be.”
Bandon opened the game with a three-pointer by Alex Butler, but Stanfield answered with two free throws by Mazie Reeser, and buckets by Kahleigha Haney and Reeser for a 6-3 lead.
Kiera Sharp and Haney hit threes in the final two minutes of the quarter for a 16-10 lead.
Bandon took advantage with Reeser on the bench at the start of the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run for a 17-16 lead before Stanfield could get Reeser back in the game.
Haney scored five quick points to give Stanfield a 21-19 lead. The teams were tied 21-21 with 2:57 to play, and tied 24-24 at the half.
Saira Arellano drilled a three-pointer for Stanfield to open the third quarter, but five points from Michalek tied the score at 33-33.
“She has been shooting well the past six weeks,” Sammons said. “Today, she believed in herself.”
Sharp said his team wasn’t quite prepared for Michalek.
“She shot the ball well,” he said. “I didn’t expect that and we didn’t adjust well.”
A three-pointer by Kayla Monkus gave Stanfield a 36-33 lead, but Michalek responded with two three-pointers for a 39-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams had a hard time getting the ball to fall in the fourth. Stanfield had one free throw 25 seconds into the quarter, but never scored again until Reeser made two free throws with 11 seconds left in the game.
Michalek added a basket for Bandon early in the quarter and Makenna Vierck made two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to keep Bandon out front for good.
“What hurt us is we weren’t communicating on offense,” Haney said. “They were fast and made it tough on us defensively.”
Vierck added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Bandon.
Haney led Stanfield with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Reeser had 10 points, six rebounds and six blocks, and Munkus had 10 points, three assists and three steals.
Haney and Michalek were named the Moda Health Players of the Game.
No. 4 Salem Academy 65, East Linn Christian 20: Clara Persons had 23 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Crusaders to a quarterfinal win over the Eagles.
Salem Academy (24-4) will play Bandon in the semifinals, while East Linn Christian (19-9) will play Stanfield in the consolation semifinals.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter, then went on a 22-2 run in the second for a 37-7 lead at the half behind 12 points from Persons.
Salem Academy outscored ELC 28-13 in the second half to cruise to victory.
Celia James added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders, while Chase Sullivan chipped in 10 points and six assists.
Piper Sewell led ELC with nine points and two steals.
No. 3 Western Christian 45, No. 6 Central Linn 39: The Pioneers went on a 16-7 run in the fourth quarter to rally for a quarterfinal win over the Cobras.
Western Christian (24-3) will take on No. 2 Weston-McEwen in the semifinals. Central Linn (19-7) will play Knappa in the consolation quarterfinals.
The Pioneers got out to a 14-12 lead after the first quarter, only to see the Cobras take a 23-22 lead at the half with Peyton Gaskey leading the way with nine points.
Central Linn held a 32-29 lead after three quarters, but Western Christian put on a show in the fourth.
Kinsey Wark hit two three-pointers and had eight points, while Haley Ferry went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Kylie Sommer led the Pioneers with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Runon Muroya added nine points, five rebounds and six assists.
Gaskey led the Cobras with 14 points and 12 rebounds, with Addie Wolff chipping in 12 points and four assists.
No. 2 Weston-McEwen 44, No. 7 Knappa 39: Kelsey Graham had a game-high 16 points as the TigerScots held off the Loggers in a quarterfinal game.
Weston-McEwen (23-6) will play Western Christian in the semifinals, while Knappa (21-7) will play Central Linn in a consolation semifinal game.
Kylie Kramer had four points in the first quarter as the TigerScots took a 10-5 lead.
In a sloppy second quarter, the Loggers went on a 8-3 run to knot the score at 13-13 at the half.
Graham scored eight of her points in the third quarter as the teams forged a 23-23 tie heading into the fourth quarter.
Weston-McEwen hit 6 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, including three by Brooklyn Parker in the finals 17 seconds of the game to seal the win.
The Loggers hurt themselves with a 2-for-8 performance from the line in the fourth.
Parker and Charlotte Hansell each added eight points for the TigerScots, with Hansell hauling down 11 rebounds and recording three steals.
Mylie Lempea led the Loggers with 11 points and five steals, while Lucy Oien had 10 points and Beth Larsen had 10 rebounds.
BOYS QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Western Christian 67, No. 8 East Linn Christian 43: Gavin Hall and Lucas Zook combined for 37 points and six steals to lead the Pioneers (25-3) to a victory over the Eagles (20-6) in the quarterfinals at the Pendleton Convention Center.
The Pioneers advance to the semifinals, where they will take on Regis. The Eagles will face Trinity Lutheran in the consolation semifinals.
Western Christian, which is looking for back-to-back titles, jumped out to a 20-8 lead in first quarter as Hall and Zook each scored 12 points.
The Eagles made things a little more interesting the second quarter, scoring 15 points to pull within 39-23 at the half.
The Pioneers would outscore the Eagles 28-20 in the second half to advance.
Hall finished with 19 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Zook had 18 points and three assists.
Greysen Sewell led ELC with 11 points, while Brison Edwards added 10 points and three assists, and Blake Knurowski had seven points and 10 rebounds.
No. 5 Regis 77, No. 4 Trinity Lutheran 67: Isaiah Koehnke scored 19 points and had 13 assists to lead the Rams to a quarterfinal victory over the Saints.
Regis will play top-ranked Western Christian in the semifinals, while Trinity Lutheran will meet East Linn Christian in the consolation semifinals.
Koehnke now has 2,626 career points, just three shy of passing all-time scoring leader Kevin Love’s mark of 2,628.
The game was close throughout the first half, with the Rams leading 16-14 after the first quarter, and a 32-31 lead at the half.
Regis gave itself a little breathing room in the third with a 20-16 run. The score was tied 40-40 with 3:53 left in the quarter, and the Saints had a couple of two-point leads before Jude Pokorney hit a pair of three-pointers for the Rams for a 52-47 lead with one quarter to play.
Regis led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, but a jumper by Andrew Imhoff cut the deficit to 10 with five seconds left in the game.
Lucas Koehnke added 18 points for the Rams, while Eli Silbernagel had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Imhoff led the Saints with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Chimi Gilbert had 20 points and five rebounds.
No. 3 Oakland 59, No. 6 Stanfield 48: Stanfield scored the first three points of the game, but Oakland went on a 15-0 run to take control and advance to the semifinals.
The Oakers (23-4) will play Portland Christian in the semifinals, while the Tigers (20-6) will take on Salem Academy in the consolation semifinals.
Joseph Fusco scored seven points, and Andy McCurdy had six in the first quarter as the Oakers cruised to a 22-11 lead.
Oakland led 32-19 at the half, but the Tigers went on a 13-3 run to open the third quarter and pull within 37-33 behind seven points from Landon Bailey. The Oakers stretched the lead out to 40-33 at the end of the quarter.
Stanfield pulled within 40-36 courtesy of a three-point play by Bailey, but it was all Oakland from there.
The Oakers went on a 14-0 run to take a 54-36 lead. Stanfield pulled within 11 points late in the game, but could not catch Oakland.
Fusco led Oakland with 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Gabe Williamson and Jaxson Clark each had 10 points.
Bailey led the Tigers with 17 points and three assists, while Michael Odell and Jesus Arellano each had nine points.
No. 2 Portland Christian 68, Salem Academy 33: The Royals raced out to a 31-6 lead after the first quarter and cruised into the semifinals from there.
Portland Christian (25-2) Will play Oakland in the semifinals, while Salem Academy (21-7) drops to the consolation bracket where it will play Stanfield.
Keylon Kittleson had 11 points in the first quarter for the Royals, while Joseph Diesel had eight and Colby Getting six.
Portland Christian led 47-23 at the half, then outscored the Crusaders 21-10 in the second half.
Kittleson led the Royals with 19 points and four steals, while Diesel had 14 points and five rebounds, and Getting had 10 points and five rebounds.
Mateo Schutt led Salem Academy with 10 points and four rebounds, while Boone Dunn had nine points and four rebounds.
