Lowdowns on showdowns
Top 10 showdowns, many in league play, grabbed the spotlight this week.
In 6A, Central Catholic slowed Clackamas’ momentum in the Mt. Hood Conference, blanking the Cavaliers, 4-0, on Tuesday. The loss was the first for Clackamas in conference play. Central Catholic had lost its first conference game, 13-0, to Barlow, one day before, so it was a good bounce back game for the Rams.
Freshman Sam Smith keyed the win for Central Catholic. The southpaw tossed a three-hit shutout, fanning seven while walking just one. Wyatt Brown and Jake Pachmayr both doubled in the win, and Aidan Rice had a two-RBI single in the 6th to extend the lead to 4-0. Lance McKey also singled and scored twice to go along with a stolen base for the Rams.
Central Catholic head coach Justin Barchus said that Smith has pitched like an ace all year despite being No. 2 in the rotation. The youngster, rated No. 1 in the Class of 2028 by Prep baseball Report, is 4-0 with a 1.20 ERA. He has good run on his fastball, a hard breaking curve and good command of his changeup.
When he doesn’t pitch, Smith plays outfield and hits atop the order. He’s batting .278 with five steals and four extra base hits.
“Electric athlete, great runner, very high baseball IQ,” Barchus said. “He's been a great kid to be around. Teammates love him. He's got a bright future ahead of him.”
Barchus added that his freshman class at Central Catholic is very talented, so the future is looking bright for the Rams.

Also in 6A, Sunset, the pre-season No. 1 team in the state, earned a 3-1 win over Metro League rival Jesuit on Monday behind superstar LHP Kruz Schoolcraft.
The Crusaders turned the tables yesterday, doubling up the Apollos, 10-5, to hand John Barnes’ team their first league loss of the year. Sophomore lefty Chase Kelly did nice work on the mound for the Jesuit. Senior Carter Stewart had a breakout offensive game for the Crusaders, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Kainoa Santiago added two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.
Jesuit built a 10-3 lead to the last inning but had to survive a scare to secure the win, leaving Schoolcraft on deck as the potential tying run..
“It’s never over until the last out,” said Jesuit coach Colin Griffin. “Sunset is so well-coached that you have to earn every single out.”
The three-game series concludes today.

In 5A, Corvallis remained unbeaten atop the Mid-Willamette Conference with two impressive wins over Lebanon. The Spartans started the year 5-4 but have now won six in a row in Eric Dazey’s return as head coach.
In Monday’s 6-1 win, Roy Bannister pitched a complete game.
“He attacked the zone with confidence and conviction, threw big pitches at key times, and wanted the ball at the end of the game,” Dazey said.
Dazey said that the defense behind Bannister also was critical to the win.
“We made some key plays -- a ball to the 6-hole that Ben Weiss fielded was a highlight -- but we picked a baserunner and made a key throw on a bobbled ball,” he said. “Finding the next play like that has been part of our growth. We also got some bunts down and hit situationally better to help score some runs in different innings.”
“All of those are examples of things we are working to do more of and will need to do consistently in order to be successful on a regular basis. Learning, growing, and creating some foundations, connections, and memories is our current focus.”

Silverton stayed tied with Corvallis atop the Mid-Willamette with two wins over Central. The Foxes are one of the biggest surprises in 5A this year. After an 11-14 record in 2024, they are 13-1 this year, including 6-0 in conference play.
Silverton and Corvallis begin a two-game series tomorrow.

In 4A, Marist Catholic improved to 10-1 overall by winning its first Sky-Em League contest, 11-6, on Tuesday over tough league foe Junction City.
The Spartans scored four in the first to set the tone and led 7-0 in the fourth before JC dented the scoreboard. Gianni Lombardi and Raith Huffman both had three hits for Marist. Lombardi and Chad Turner combined for five RBIs.
Connor Clift had two hits and an RBI for Junction City, which suffered its first league loss.
JC and Marist (1-0 in league play) play a double header tomorrow. North Bend is 3-0 in the Sky-Em and 13-2 overall. The Bulldogs will play three against Marist Catholic and three against Junction City, beginning May 6, to close the regular season.

Meanwhile, in Pendleton, the Buckaroos edged two-time defending 4A champion Scappoose, 10-7, on Tuesday in non-conference play, snapping Scappoose’s six-game winning streak.
The game was back and forth until a two-run single from Evan Lehnert and two-run double from Colin Harrington in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Pendleton / Nixyaawii the lead for good.
Quinton Olson had a grand slam for Scappoose in the top of th second, which tied the score after the Bucks plated four in the first on RBI hits from Vance Nelson, Mason Strong, Keegan Kline and Kolt McQuinn.
Colson Primus earned the win on the mound in relief for Pendleton. He also doubled and scored the Buckaroos’ first run and drove home one on a sacrifice fly.
Pendleton / Nixyaawii improved to10-6 with the win. Scappoose fell to 9-5.

The key game in 3A was between Blanchet Catholic and Taft on Tuesday in Special District 3. The Cavaliers remained undefeated on the season at 15-0 with the 2-1 win. Taft, which fell to 12-3 overall, gets a rematch today at home.
***
In 2A/1A, Grant Union / Prairie City / Monument handed Union / Cove its first loss of the season, 8-1, on Tuesday.
Senior Mason Benge pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts. The only run allowed was unearned. Senior Lukas Blood went 3-for-3 with two doubles and reached base four times. He and Ryland Beil, who had two extra-base hits, combined for five hits and three RBIs.
The Prospectors are 7-0 in Special District 7 and 8-7 overall. They play Union / Cove (10-1 overall) again next Tuesday.
Still undefeated
Two weeks ago, five baseball teams remained undefeated in the OSAA.
That number had dwindled to three.
Not only did Union / Cove lose on Tuesday, Reedsport (11-1) lost to Lowell, 6-0, on April 14. Reedsport dominated the Devils, 9-1, in an earlier contest.
The three unbeaten teams are South Salem (15-0) in 6A, Wilsonville (15-0) in 5A and Kennedy (14-0) in 2A /1A.
South Salem, which owns wins over Three Rivers League powers West Linn and Lakeridge this year, outscored its last five opponents, 79-4, heading into Friday’s non-league with Westview.
Wilsonville, which is 5-0 against Northwest Oregon Conference opponents, also is 4-0 against tough Inter-Mountain Conference foes. The Wildcats outscored their last five opponents, 49-5.
Seniors Mark Wiepert (.619) and Drew Hall (.535) have keyed the offense, while senior hurler Wade Hagey has an ERA of 0.70 and has yielded just one hit over his last 12 innings.
“Beyond these three key contributors, we have worked hard to free guys up at the plate, simplifying the approach and it seems to be working,” first-year head coach Jason Rasco said. “We are currently hitting .340 as a team.”
Kennedy, which won three close contests in Special District 2 over tough Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian, has had its way with Western Christian this week, outscoring the Crusaders, 29-2, in two games. The Trojans will take on St. Paul, also undefeated in the district, in a three-game series starting May 5 that will likely determine the district champion.
Speaking of St. Paul…
While most teams playing competitive schedules have played 12 or more games so far on the year, St. Paul stands at just 6-1 on the years. The Bucks lost their opener, but have since rattled off six straight wins.
But why so few contests?
“Weather got us and then we had five games set up but no umpires were available,” coach Dwayne Nowlin explained.
Nowlin said he hopes to end up playing around 23 games. That’s a lot of baseball over the final month of the regular season, especially considering St. Paul’s special circumstances: nine of the 28 players in the program also run track! Many are active in Future Farmers of America, which occasionally creates conflicts as well.
News & notes
Senior lefty Drew Camp had 17 strike outs over 6.1 innings Tuesday to help South Umpqua top Sutherlin, 9-1, in the first of a three-game series. Freshman Camden Black led the offense with two hits in three trips with two driven in.
***
Noah Scharer is now South Salem’s career hits leader. The senior entered Tuesday’s game with 107 hits and singled in the first to tie the mark set by Joey August in 2005 and matched by Aaron Zavala in 2018. His third-inning single gave him the record outright.
***
Hood River Valley made the most of its lone game this week. On Tuesday, the Eagles defeated Putnam, 12-4, behind Bodie Stuben’s complete game on the mound. The junior RHP fanned 13. Senior INF Addison Postlewait led the offense with three hits and four RBIs.
***
Gladstone had its five-game winning streak snapped by The Dalles / Dufur on Wednesday. The Gladiators had started 1-7 before the streak began.
“I believe our early struggles had a lot to do with not practicing on a baseball field,” said Gladstone coach Casey Webster. “It was into the fifth week of the season before we were able to practice on our field.”
Webster said that the wet weather made the infield grass so thick and bumpy that it was impossible to mow until it completely dried out.
Webster also lauded senior pitcher Collin Smith or his outstanding work on the mound.
***
Catlin Gabel was 7-18 a year ago. This was supposed to be a better year for the Eagles, but they currently sit at 1-9 overall. Injuries to the team’s two main pitchers, both seniors, have not helped.
***
Micah Burrell is a freshman starting at second base for Ida B. Wells. He leads the Guardians in batting average at .410 and has been an on-base machine who also has four doubles and 11 RBIs.
Burrell’s level of success as a freshman hasn’t been seen at the school in almost 40 years, when Tommy Sandt, Jr., broke onto the scene. Sandt was an all-time great at the school.
***
Henley has won nine game in a row. Senior RHP Mark Carpenter struck out 14 in 6.2 innings on April 11 to give the Hornets sole possession of the Skyline Conference lead with a 5-2 win over Hidden Valley / New Hope Christian.
