Ridgeview's sweep of Bend last week kept the Ravens in the thick of the IMC race
Ridgeview's sweep of Bend last week kept the Ravens in the thick of the IMC race

A little bit Country

Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian had a big week, sweeping three from always-tough St. Paul in 2A/1A Special District 2.

Pitching was the key to the Cougars’ success, said coach Matt Haring.

In the Monday opener, a 2-0 win, Tyson Smith threw a complete-game one-hitter with 11 strike outs.

On Wednesday, Ethan Hiebenthal held the Buckaroos to just two hits and Country Christian backed him with 12 hits and 11 runs in the team’s second consecutive shutout.

On Friday, the Cougars completed the sweep behind a combined effort on the mound from Smith and Caleb Norton. The duo fanned 13 in the 7-5 win.

Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian (10-7) won again yesterday, convincingly over Western Christian, to extend its winning streak to seven straight after a 3-7 start. The Cougars are 7-3 in district play, having lost all three to Kennedy, which entered this week with an 18-0 record.

Bucked from unbeaten ranks

St. Paul was reeling when it took the field yesterday on the road against undefeated Kennedy.

After a 9-1 start to the regular season, the Buckaroos had lost four in a row and had scored just seven runs over that span. Not just that; Dwayne Nowlin’s dual-spring-sport kids (baseball/track) had made 18 errors over that span.

Not only was Kennedy 18-0; the Trojans had yielded just three runs over the past six games and 38 all season long.

Final score: St. Paul 12, Kennedy 8.

Baseball is a crazy sport.

“Last game against Country we played really good and we felt good going to Kennedy,” Nowlin said. “We smoked the ball and played great D. 15 hits and only 2 errors. Kennedy had four errors. “You don't see them boot the ball around like that.”

That leaves three

Here we are, a little over two weeks from the end of the regular season, and there are just three unbeaten teams remaining in the state of Oregon. And they are not in the lowest classification, like one might expect; but rather in 6A, 5A and 3A.

South Salem is 17-0 and dominating 6A, with 211 runs scored and 27 runs allowed to date. The Saxons open a three-game series today versus Sprague. The Olympians (11-5) are tied with South Salem atop the Central Valley Conference at 3-0 and represent the biggest obstacle between the Saxons and an undefeated regular season.

5A Wilsonville (19-0) is the other unbeaten team. The Wildcats have outscored opponents, 202-41, this year and yet could still finish third in the Northwest Oregon Conference. That’s because their 9-0 NWOC record will come under pressure in the last two weeks with games versus Canby (8-0 in conference play), La Salle Prep (7-0) and Hood River Valley (6-1). Wilsonville takes on Putnam at home today in conference action. The Kingsmen are 0-7 in the NWOC but 7-4 against everyone else.

Blanchet Catholic currently rules 3A at 20-0. The Cavaliers have been downright dominant all year, outscoring teams, on average, by a 15-1 score. Blanchet won't likely be tested until next week, when it plays two against Santiam Christian, which is also undefeated in Special District 3.

***

Incidentally, there are only four winless teams remaining in the Association, one in 5A, one in 3A and one in 2A/1A.

The week that was

Last week was an interesting one around the OSAA, with key games and results that further shaped league, conference and district races.

In 2A/1A, Portland Christian stunned Knappa, 2-1, in the opening game of a three-game series in Special District 1, taking the lead with a two-out, run-scoring single in the sixth inning. The loss moved the Loggers a game behind Clatskanie in the district standings.

Knappa rebounded to sweep PC in a Friday double dip, 7-3 and 12-3. Jeff Miller’s team got solid pitching from Oliver Stevens, Braxton Hill, and Lukas Masters combined with a long home run from Jude Miller to win both games.

Union / Cove, which started the year 10-0, had lost two of three entering Monday’s game with 2A/1A Special District 7-leading Grant Union / Prairie City / Monument. The Bobcats emerged with a 4-1 win; then split two with Irrigon later in the week.

“Last week was important,” said Union / Cove head coach Greg Poor. “We bounced back and got the win versus GU, which is the first time this group has ever beaten GU. For Irrigon, we were disappointed in our performance. It was an ugly day for both teams, and in the end, we were thankful to get out of there with one win.”

On Tuesday, 1A Umpqua Valley Christian, the defending 2A/1A state champions, edged 4A Junction City, 10-9, in an endowment game.

UVC trailed, 8-0, in the contest going to the bottom of the fourth before scoring seven to make things interesting. The Monarchs (19-3) added one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the lead. Junction City (13-7) scored one in the seventh against UVC ace Ty Hellenthal, but the senior two big strikeouts to close it out, stranding the go-ahead runner at second base.

“It was a good, hard-fought baseball game,” said Umpqua Valley Christian coach Dave York. “We greatly respect and appreciate larger schools allowing us to compete against them. Marist did this earlier in the year. We hope that we make them better, like they’ve made us better.”

***

The big news in 3A came Saturday, when Taft shut out Warrenton, 3-0, snapping a 12-game unbeaten streak for the reigning 3A state champions.

Taft junior lefty Zack Hankins outdueled Warrenton senior RHP Talon McGrorty in the game. Hankins yielded just two hits and struck out 14 in a route-going performance. McGrorty gave up only one hit himself, but he plunked three and had some shaky defense behind him early, which allowed Taft to break on top and hold on.

***

In 4A, Marshfield won two of three from North Bend, putting Marist Catholic on top alone in the Sky-Em League at 5-1. North Bend had been undefeated in league play entering the week.

***

Ridgeview swept three from Bend in the 5A Intermountain Conference to carve the chase for the title from three contenders to just two.

Sophomore RHP Finn Chambers gave up two runs in the first inning on Friday but no more in the Ravens’ 8-2 win, which was called after six due to lightning. Seniors Logan Nakamura, Jackson Hertel and Caimen Jensen each had two hits and an RBI for the victors. The sweep kept Ridgeview, the defending IMC champions, one game behind Summit in the conference standings. The Storm took 2-of-3 from Ridgeview earlier in the year, but will need to fend off Bend this week, starting today, to stay atop the conference.

***

In 6A, Central Catholic took 5-0 and 15-3 wins over Sandy to surge on top of the Mt. Hood Conference at 9-1. Sandy had been 8-0 and in first in the conference.

In the Thursday shutout, the Rams got a complete game from freshman Sam Smith, who struck out 10. Ryan Davis supported his hurler with a huge, three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.

On Friday, Central Catholic amassed 16 hits – Smith, Davis, Lance McKey, Aidan Rice, Wyatt Brown, Matsen Saruwatari and Dexter Stremming all had multi-hit games in support of Logan Anzellotti, who gave up just one earned over six innings for the win.

Grant won two critical games from Lincoln in the PIL; then was surprised by McDaniel, 1-0, on Friday. That left Grant, Cleveland and Ida B. Wells tied atop the league standings at 6-1 starting this week.

This week

There are a slew of meaningful series this week in the OSAA.

In 6A, Ida B. Wells got a critical win yesterday, 13-1 over Cleveland, to move to 7-1 in the PIL, tied with Grant and now a game ahead of the Warriors at 6-2.

Sophomore Jack Burnham recovered from a 24-pitch first inning to throw a five-inning gem, and every starter had at least one hit against the pitching-rich Warriors, including Burnham, who had his first multi-hit game. The bottom of the lineup got in the action with eight-hitter Diggy Griffin hitting a three-run homer and nine- hitter Teague Zimmer scoring three runs.

“Yesterday’s game was the most important game of the season, because it was the next game,” said Guardian head coach Jeremy Shetler. “Now, Wednesday’s game versus Jefferson is the most important game of the season… FOWN…‘Focus on what’s next’ is something senior Cody Roletto came up with.”

Three-time defending state champion West Linn has a three-game lead over Tualatin atop the Three Rivers League ahead of today’s series opener with the Timberwolves. West Linn and Tualatin swept series last week, over Lakeridge and Tigard, respectively. Senior lefty Carson Boyer is on the bump today for the Lions.

In 5A. Hood River Valley, which lost, 3-0, to La Salle Prep on Friday, gets the Falcons again today, then two versus Canby to close the week. The Eagles will probably know whether they are in the thick of, or completely out of, the conference chase by week’s end.

The 4A showdown is between Philomath and Newport. Both teams sat 9-0 and well clear of everyone else atop the Oregon West Conference entering the week.

Philomath landed the first blow, doubling up the Cubs, 6-3, on Monday. Philomath has now won 11 games in a row. The loss snapped Newport’s 11-game winning streak.

The teams play two more this week.

“It was a good win and a good way to start the series with a win at their place,” said Philomath coach Levi Webber. “It's always nice to get the win in the first of a three game set, but we know Newport is going to come back and compete their tails off Wednesday and Thursday so we definitely still have our work cut out for us.

“It's a big week because it’s the next series,” said Newport coach Taylor Plesha before Monday’s game. “Our mindset is to win pitches, win outs and win innings. We try not to worry about anything that isn't in our control.”

Clatskanie is 9-0 and Knappa 8-1 in 2A/1A Special District 1. They play today, followed by a Friday doubleheader.

Knappa has not lost a league championship since 2011. The Tigers and Loggers both made the final eight last year in the state playoffs. Both lost to eventual champion Umpqua Valley Christian, Clatskanie in the quarters and Knappa in the championship game.

Clatskanie comes into the game winners of 10 in a row.

“Knappa will have to have solid defense and make the most of limited offensive opportunities in order to knock off the red-hot Tigers,” said Knappa coach Miller.

News & notes

Wilsonville is batting .347 as a team, with eight players hitting above .300. The Wildcats also have two pitchers with an ERA of less than one and a team fielding percentage hovering around .950. It’s no wonder they are 19-0.

***

Central scored 40 runs in three wins last week. JT Girod, a sophomore infielder, drove in 15 of them. He had eight extra base hits in a 9-for-13 week. Wow!

***

Pendleton / Nixyaawii right hander Evan Lehnert isn’t just one of the top strikeout artists in Oregon, he also is versatile. The senior has played all nine positions for the Bucks this season!

***

After making the 5A championship game the past two seasons, West Albany started this year winning just one of its first eight games. The Bulldogs, however, are 9-1 over their last 10, including Monday’s 4-3 loss at Central. Rylan Mathiesen and Jaden Fifhause on the mound and the offense of Drew Rice have been keys to the team’s resurgence.

***

Monday’s 12-0 win over winless McKay gave Corvallis a dozen wins in a row. The Spartans have scored in double figures and have four shutouts during the run.

***

Roseburg senior Jake Johnson won twice last week, including on Saturday, when he outdueled Dominic Daffron, 1-0, in Game 1 of a double header with North Medford. Colton Miller and Cade Petterson were 3-for-4 and Jake Payton had two hits and four RBIs as the Black Tornado rebounded to take Game 2, 10-3.

Roseburg has a half-game lead over North Medford in the Southwest Oregon Conference with five conference games remaining.

Stats categories

We continue our rundown this week of those Oregon ballplayers putting up numbers on diamonds around the state.

Note the new thresholds in many categories this week. An asterisk means that the player qualifies given the current thresholds, but that we lack up-to-date information on the player.
