Molalla on Friday won its first conference title in 30 years
Molalla on Friday won its first conference title in 30 years

Yes, still undefeated!

The last team in Oregon to finish undefeated was Kennedy (31-0) in 2023.

Last year, two teams, Henley in 4A and Blanchet Catholic in 2A/1A, had one-loss regular seasons before losing in the semifinals. Henley lost to Marist Catholic in extra innings. Blanchet fell to eventual state champion Umpqua Valley Christian.

With one week remaining in the 2025 regular season, three teams remain unbeaten. South Salem in 6A, Wilsonville in 5A and Blanchet Catholic, now in 3A, not only can finish the regular-season without a blemish; they have the opportunity to be undefeated state champions.

Odds against that happening are long, however. In the history of the OSAA, no more than one state champion has ever finished without a loss in any given year.

South Salem (24-0) finishes this week with a Wednesday double header versus Grants Pass and a Friday game with South Medford. Both teams are above .500, in Southwest Conference play and overall.

Wilsonville (24-0) is still in a fight for the Northwest Oregon Conference title. The Wildcats play La Salle Prep today, then close Thursday and Friday against Canby, which has the same 13-0 NWOC record that Wilsonville does.

Blanchet Catholic (24-0), in its first year under coach Jason Black (last year’s coach, David Winstead, died of colon cancer on July 1), plays at 14-6 St. Paul today before ending the regular season with two at home on Thursday versus 19-3 Marist Catholic, the No. 1 team in the final 4A baseball coaches poll.

All may come out of the week still yet to taste defeat. Or all may lose a game or even two.

But one thing is sure: all three of these teams will be battle tested and favored to play for a title on June 7.

Lincoln logs playoff berth

Lincoln used a distance-going performance from sophomore lefty Jack Aleskus to defeat Cleveland on Friday, 8-3. The victory assured that the Cardinals would finish top three in the PIL, thereby securing a spot in the upcoming 6A playoffs.

Lincoln (14-12; 11-3 in PIL) made the playoffs last year as well, and finished 19-8 overall. But 10 Cardinals graduated from that team, including the entire starting staff; junior Gabe Coltman, the PIL POY, transferred to Sunset and three-year varsity starter Nolan Winthrop was lost to a season-ending ankle injury one week before the season began.

“After all of that - you would think a public school would go into a complete rebuild,” said coach CJ Watson. “We had several seniors, and younger players, step up throughout the season.”

Special sauce for big Mac

Sherwood held a one-game lead over McMinnville in the Pacific Conference chase until the Grizzlies took two-of-three from the Bowmen last week.

McMinnville won the series opener a week ago Monday, 6-2, thanks to a strong start from Brayden Mix and timely hitting from Mix, Cam Hyder and Aaron Rolfe.

On Wednesday, Hyder’s complete-game 5-0 shutout, supported by four early runs, gave McMinnville a one-game lead in the conference standings.

Sherwood evened the race up on Friday with a 10-2 win. Sam Hunt hit a grand slam in the second for the Bowmen as part of a 10-run inning. Connor Parry got the win on the mound, scattering eight hits. McMinnville scored only twice all game long, but not for want of baserunners. The Grizzlies stranded 14 throughout the contest.

Both McMinnville and Sherwood won series openers yesterday, McMinnville over Glencoe,10-0; and Sherwood over Liberty, 7-2. If both teams win again on Tuesday and Wednesday, McMinnville will win the conference title via tiebreaker, by virtue of winning twice over Sherwood last week.

Sunset leaves Thurston parched

Sunset, last year’s 6A runner up, hosted two-time defending 5A champion Thurston last Wednesday.

The game turned out to be a thriller.

Thurston, which had yet to lose to an Oregon team all season, led 3-0 after four innings. Sunset rallied to tie on a three-run shot from Coltman in the bottom of the fifth. Max Waldrip walked it off in the seventh with an RBI single, which made a winner of Dakota Chun.

Sunset coach John Barnes said that pitching and defense will need to be strong if the Apollos hope to be back in the 6A title game again this year.

“The single elimination format puts a premium on pitching depth,” he said. “We will need to maximize that to go deep in the playoffs.”

If at first you don’t succeed, Tri Tri again

Molalla had a historic last week. The team went 3-0 to clinch its first Tri-Valley conference championship since 1995.

Junior Camdyn Morey’s strong hitting and pitching performance against Gladstone, in a 9-3 win, got the week started well. The next day, Molalla beat Madras, 3-1, thanks to a complete-game gem from sophomore Colton Anderson, with strong defensive support to boot!

Those wins meant that the league finale on Friday versus The Dalles / Dufur would be for the conference title. The team split two games earlier in the season. A Molalla win would tie the Riverhawks atop the standings at 11-4 and give Molalla the tiebreaker edge for the conference championship.

Molalla won the home game, 5-3. Senior Nyxon Hopping hit a deep, game-changing home run over the centerfield fence in support of winning pitcher Kyler Dickerson, who gave up just one run on four hits over six innings with 11 strikeouts.

Molalla will be the No. 8 seed when the 4A state playoffs begin one week from today.

News & notes

Taft junior lefthander Zack Hankins has not yielded an earned run this year through 55 innings. The lowest ERA ever in the state or Oregon was 0.11 by Rick Farthing of Corvallis 56 years ago.

***

Freshman Nolan Marcoe was on base five times, including three hits and two walks, in Gladstone’s 19-0 win at Crook County last Friday. Sophomores Matthew Contreras and Will Budworth piled on, with five hits and five RBIs between them. Senior Micah Arnold added three hits and four RBIs and also pitched a one-hitter in the five-inning game.

***

Last week, on his mother Kolene's birthday, Ida B. Wells senior Cam Hammer set the school single-season stolen base with No. 24 on the year. The record had stood for 36 years. Hammer is now tied with Brian Lee for career stolen bases at 42.

***

Ida B. Wells senior Diggy Griffin tied the school single-season triples record with No. 6. He needs one more to break the tie with Chemeketa CC head coach Gerhett Moser, the school’s career triples record leader with 11.

***

Knappa was state runner up to Umpqua Valley Christian in 2A/1A last year. UVC is again the favorite this season, but Jeff Miller’s Loggers, currently 16-5 overall, are looking forward to the challenge of trying to make another deep playoff run.

“Knappa will need to play solid defense, continue to have good pitching and find ways to scratch out runs,” Miller said. “Runs have been difficult to come by for much of the season. Finding ways to string hits together has been a challenge. I think we can play with any team on the schedule but are also vulnerable to any team in the playoffs. It should be an interesting and enjoyable tournament.”

***

North Eugene won its fifth straight game on Friday by blanking Springfield, 10-0. Senior Aaron Spratt throw a one-hitter in the five-inning game. He needed only 40 pitches, 32 of which were strikes, to complete the win.

Stats categories

We continue our rundown this week of those Oregon ballplayers putting up numbers on diamonds around the state.

The information below comes exclusively from baseball coaches. Baseball coaches who have not contributed to the lists below, but have players who qualify, may contact John Tawa at [email protected] to learn how to get their players on these lists.

Note the new thresholds in many categories this week. An asterisk (*) means that the player qualifies given the current thresholds, but that we lack up-to-date information on the player.
