The Crusaders have seven, eight if you count the Covid year…With former Clackamas head coach Lisa Flaherty-McBee in charge, second-year school Nelson went 14-0 to win the Mount Hood Conference title…Oregon City won the Three Rivers League title for the first time since 1998. The Pioneers, who dropped just one set during league play, also took home the Academic All-State title with a team GPA of 3.99…Four seniors on Roseburg’s roster have committed to play in college next year, including Hayden Pinard, who will play at Western Oregon. Pinard leads the state in assists…
Sheldon comes to state riding a nine-match winning streak. The Irish defeated both Nelson and Westview on their way to capturing the season-ending West Linn Tournament in mid-October…South Medford is at the state tournament for the first time in school history. One of the school’s loses this year came to University Prep of Redding, the reigning California Division IV champions…Sprague was under .500 a year ago, but reached the state quarterfinals. The Olympians returned 10 from that team and doubled their win total…Westview took two sets from undefeated Jesuit this year. The Wildcats, with 10 seniors on the current roster, was 0-3 versus the Crusaders a year ago without scoring more than 22 points in any one set.

Bend was in the 6A Final Four last year, taking third overall. The Lava Bears, who graduated five starters off of that team, have an assistant coach, Liz Hewitt, who has been coaching at the school for 44 years…Crater head coach Leaf Jensen is in his third stint coaching the Comets. He is the only member of the staff not to attend the high school, though his daughter, Rane Jensen, did, graduating in 2018, the last time Crater went to the state tournament. Rane Jensen and assistant coach Paige Berriochoa are the only Crater players ever to earn First Team All-State honors…Other than junior libero Dani Street, Crescent Valley’s best players are all sophomores. Silverton boasts 2021 Oregon Gatorade POY Alexis Haury. The University of Washington recruit is one of the top setters nationwide in her class…Silverton calls its team manager “Bruce” (presumably after Bruce Wayne), because of a fun lip-synching battle in Bend at the beginning of the season, when she played the alter ego…South Albany has no juniors on its roster. Eight of the 11 are seniors…The RedHawks started 2022 with a 5-4 record. All four losses came to teams playing in the 5A or 6A state tournament…Co-head coach Kelle Angel was a high school senior at South Albany the last time the school appeared in a state tournament… Defending state champion West Albany is back at state despite heavy graduation losses from a year ago. The Bulldogs bonded by doing a team karaoke session before each home game…Wilsonville is back at state despite graduating four impact players, including superstar OH Ashli Edmiston, who is now at Abilene Christian…Edmiston is second on the Wildcats in kills and first in digs…Wilsonville, which has been state runner up the last two times a formal tournament was conducted, is led this year by setter-turned-outside Makenna Wiepert, a senior who will set collegiately for Texas-San Antonio next year.

Baker is the 2022 Regional Sportsmanship Award recipient…Cascade, the defending 4A champions, bought a “team fish” that shares the team colors of black and yellow. Cascade named the fish, "Pickles Aquaphor Cougar the Third aka Super Freaky Girl…" Crook County has eight state titles. The Cowgirls have never been in a state championship match that they have not won…Henley has lost three times to Mazama. They are the Hornets’ only 4A losses this year. If both Henley and Mazama win (or lose) quarterfinal matches, they will play for a fifth time at the state tournament.
Top-seeded Marshfield has a team mascot, “Meter,” that is a baby doll. It has its own Instagram account and many have thought it was a real baby when the team comes into the gym…Mazama boasts two sets of twins on its roster: Isabelle and Sandra Hill and Isabella and Alexia Lowe…The last time The Dalles placed among the top four at state was 1998, when assistant coach Teresa Morris was on the team. The Dalles was 7-11 in coach Julie Summers’ first year at the school and has tripled its season win total one year later. Summer said the secret was creating opportunities for the players to play. “My coaching style is that I am their biggest supporter,” she added. “I don’t expect perfection but I expect them to work hard and do their best.” Tillamook’s players go crazy for a Grandpa Dave’s fresh-squeezed frozen apple juice…

Assistant coaches Emma Hoke and Jasmine Ruiz played on the last Culver state championship team 10 years ago…Gaston, with 24-year-old alumna Charity Hall, has one of the youngest coaching staffs in the area. “Many other coaches and officials think we are just assistants or students, which makes it that much sweeter for us when we coach our girls and get the win,” Hall said…Monroe won its league for the fourth straight year in 2022. The Dragons did not drop a set in league play…Oakland is in the state tournament one year after a 3-17 campaign…The Oakers’ three wins last year came against teams that combined for just five wins in 2021…Tia Picknell’s strong senior season – she is second in the state in blocks – is a key reason for the turnaround. Picknell played at 6A Roseburg as a freshman and was injured her sophomore and junior seasons.
Oakridge’s players remember January, 2021, when the only option was to play outdoors on the tennis courts no matter the weather. That’s why they rush to get on the court, music blaring, to play their “pickup game” before practice, a combination of warm ups, dancing and singing…Aly Herber leads the state in kills for defending 2A champion Salem Academy…Of Stanfield’s 11 players, SEVEN are in their first year on varsity! Assistant coach Devon Stackhouse Bruckner was on the Willamina team that placed second in 2011…Hallee Hughes, Willamina’s top attacker, is the reigning 3A champion in both the javelin and discus.

Crane has a core group that’s been playing together since fifth grade…Kortney Doman is a long jump champion and the shortest play in Oregon with a jump touch of 10 feet or higher…Damascus Christian’s players recently learned to line dance and now do it before every match… North Clackamas Christian may be 1-5 against the 1A state tournament field, but the Saints have wins this fall over 2A participants Monroe, Oakridge and Gaston…The defending champs from North Douglas will be without senior OH Asia Ward. She tore an ACL a couple of weeks back (get better soon!).
Powder Valley’s players have been attending state championship and cheering on Powder Valley teams since they were pre-teens… Rogue Valley Adventist Academy is 43-4 over the past two years. Its top three players, all seniors, have been going to school together every year since Kindergarten. They started playing volleyball together in seventh grade and never lost so much as a set during middle school competition…In Les Hiller’s 13 years coaching St. Paul, the Buckaroos have never missed the state playoffs… Umpqua Valley Christian has won 16 of its last 19 matches heading into the state tournament. Its only losses have come versus teams in the 1A state tournament.
