In only their second season, Nelson's boys have made their mark in Oregon high school swimming.
The Hawks set an OSAA record for the 200-yard medley relay in Friday's preliminaries at the OSAA 6A championships at Tualatin Hills Recreation Center in Beaverton.
The team of senior Quinlan Gould, freshman Drew Eubanks and juniors Evan Escobar and Mason Hopper finished in one minute, 33.38 seconds. They narrowly eclipsed the old mark of 1:33.42, set by Jesuit in 2020.
Nelson is in position to contend for the team title. The Hawks also got No. 1 qualifying times from the 200 freestyle relay (same lineup), Hopper (100 freestyle), Gould (100 backstroke) and Eubanks (100 breaststroke).
Jesuit put 14 entries in the finals, ahead of Nelson (11) and Sunset (10). Jesuit is led by senior Diego Nosack, who qualified first in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. The Crusaders also have the top-seeded 400 freestyle relay.
5A
Parkrose junior Thomas Olsen set the 5A meet record in the 200 freestyle (1:39.38) and also qualified first in the 500 freestyle. He won both events at state last year.
Summit and reigning champion Crescent Valley earned 12 and 11 finals entries, respectively. Crescent Valley qualified first in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Summit was second in all three relays.
Caldera sophomore Campbell McKean swam the top times in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
4A/3A/2A/1A
Catlin Gabel moved into position for a repeat title by securing 10 finals entries.
The Eagles got the No. 1 qualifying times in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay and top performances from junior Hodge Dauler (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and senior Akira Van de Groenendaal (100 backstroke).
Newport, the 2020 champion and runner-up last season, will have six finals entries. The Cubs got top times from the 200 freestyle relay, junior Sam Postlewaite (50 freestyle) and sophomore Ben Hurty (100 freestyle).
La Grande sophomore Zane Ricker (500 freestyle) and senior Glenn Ricker (100 breaststroke) qualified first. The Tigers and North Bend have the second most finals entries with seven.
Girls
6A
Junior Sydney Wilson qualified first in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and swam a leg on the first-place 200 medley relay to lead Jesuit, which earned a meet-high 13 finals berths.
The Crusaders also got the top qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke from senior Alaina Pitton.
Lake Oswego qualified first in the 400 freestyle relay and got No. 1 times from senior Dylan Gustaff in the 200 IM and sophomore AnneMarie Vlaic in the 100 butterfly.
Sunset has the second-most finals entries with 10. The Apollos finished first in the 200 freestyle relay.
5A
It was a big day for Bend, which set 5A meet records in both freestyle relays and qualified a meet-high 11 entries for the finals.
The Lava Bears' 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Camryn Meskill, junior Jacquelyn Horning, freshman Maddie Thornton and senior Grace Benson placed first in the record time of 1:35.40. The same quartet came back later and set the record in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking 3:29.70.
Meskill, who won the 6A title in the 50 freestyle as a freshman, qualified first in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Crescent Valley senior Kelsey Wasikowski, champion in the 50 freestyle as a freshman and 100 breaststroke as a junior, set a 5A meet record in the 200 IM (2:02.18).
Wilsonville senior Helena Jones (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Summit senior Ginger Kiefer (500 freestyle, 100 backstroke) each qualified first in two events.
4A/3A/2A/1A
Catlin Gabel, last year's runner-up, qualified a meet-high 10 entries for the finals, including the top time in the 400 freestyle relay. Eagles junior Adrienne Tam qualified first in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM.
Reigning champion Sweet Home will have six entries in the finals. The Huskies earned the top seed in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay and the No. 2 seed in the 400 freestyle relay. They also have the top qualifier in the 100 backstroke in freshman Breeza Rodriguez.
Cove freshman Becca Koza recorded the top time in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, just ahead of Catlin Gabel sophomore Jane Hanson, the reigning champion in both events.
