On Friday and Saturday, hundreds of high school students descended on the Western Oregon University campus to partake in the 2023 OSAA / OnPoint Community Credit Union Speech and Debate Championships.
Competing in 18 different speech and debate events, dozens of teams battled… and debated one another en route to a state championship. Here is how it all played out:
6A
1. Cleveland - 102 sweepstakes points.
2. Sunset - 96.
3. Lakeridge - 58.
4. Lincoln - 37.
5. Clackamas - 31.
6A saw the closest race, as Sunset and Cleveland nearly doubled the point total of the next closest team.
Sunset grabbed a bunch of points with first-place finishes from Shaira Hasan in After Dinner Speaking and Jeffrey Teh in Extemp. They also saw top three finishes in Program Oral Interpretation, Impromptu, and Informative. Not to mention going 1-2 in Extemp and 1-3 in After Dinner Speaking.
Not to be outdone, Cleveland also showed up strong, edging Sunset by just six points. Bransford & Adamski placed first in Duo Interpretation, Dunya Dogramaci won LIELL, and Stella Greenvoss took the Informative crown and earned co-champion status in Prose.
5A
1. Bend - 36 sweepstakes points.
2. Hood River Valley - 12.
3. West Albany - 8.
4. La Salle Prep - 6.
5. Summit - 6.
Bend ran away with the 5A sweepstakes, earning three times as many points as second place Hood River Valley. The Lava Bears hit a homerun in Humorous Interpretation, with Tessa Baraybar and Hadley Charles grabbing the 1-2 finish.
4A/3A/2A/1A
1. St. Mary’s - 76 sweepstakes points.
2. Bandon - 44.
3. Marshfield - 28.
4. Catlin Gabel - 15.
5. Delphian - 14.
Another runaway, St. Mary’s nearly doubled up second place Bandon, who itself had a comfortable lead over Marshfield. The real battle was at 4-5, where just one point separated Catlin Gabel and Delphian.
St. Mary’s cruised to victory with first-place finishes from Brown & Varley in Parliamentary Debate, Dylan Daneman in Congress, and Sophia Cox in Dramatic Interpretation.
