Showdown time in TRL

Prior to Monday, there were three unbeaten teams in the 6A Three Rivers League: Lakeridge, Lake Oswego and West Linn. Those three were ranked 2-3-4 in the latest OSAAtoday 6A Coaches Poll.

Four days later and only Lakeridge is unbeaten. That’s because LO and West Linn are playing one another this week. Lake Oswego won a close game on Monday at home, 4-1, as Jonah Barkoff held the Lions to three hits over six innings.

On Wednesday, West Linn won, 11-1, on its turf thanks to another strong outing on the mound by Gabe Howard and hard hitting throughout the lineup, led by junior catcher Ryan VandenBrink, who hit a two-run homer and two doubles in a 4-for-4 day.

The series finale is tomorrow back at Lake Oswego. While the losing team will likely stand two games back of Lakeridge, it will not be out of the chase for the league title. Lakeridge’s last two series are against West Linn and Lake Oswego. LO gets Tualatin and then Lakeridge. West Linn faces Oregon City to complete its TRL slate.

Intrigue in 3A

There are two tight 3A league chases.

In Special District 1, Neah-Kah-Nie owns a one-game lead over Banks and beat the Braves, 4-1, on April 18. The teams square off again on May 8, with Banks likely needing to win to share the District title.

In the Far West League, both Cascade Christian and South Umpqua are 14-0 with four league games remaining. The two play against one another in a doubleheader on May 15 that could determine the champion.

Unbeatens

Two weeks ago, when the last Notebook was published, we were down to three unbeaten teams in the state of Oregon.

Since then, 4A Gladstone has lost twice, to Madras on April 27 and at Crook County yesterday.

The other two, Kennedy and St. Paul, remain undefeated on the year. Kennedy is 21-0 overall and St. Paul is 17-0.

Kennedy has been absolutely dominant, outscoring opponents, 224-18.

St. Paul’s run differential also is very large and might have been even larger had its ace, big lefty Warren Rose, been able to pitch all season. He missed a month due to injury and recently returned to the rotation.

“We're just doing all the little things right and lots of younger players are stepping up,” said Buckaroos coach Dwayne Nowlin. “I’m so proud of these boys.”

Kennedy and St. Paul meet for three, starting Monday, to determine the champion in 2A/1A Special District 2.

Playoffs!

Yes, it’s only early May but the playoffs will be here before you know it. Here are how many teams will reach the postseason and when the games will be played:

6A – 32 teams

5A – 16

4A –16

3A – 20

2A/1A – 22

May 22 – 6A, 3A, 2A/1A first round

May 23 – 5A, 4A first round

May 24 – 6A, 3A, 2A/1A second round

May 26 – all quarterfinals

May 30 – all semifinals

June 3 – all championship games

Where will the championship games be held? That’s still TBD as the OSAA works to determine the venues that work best for the finalists given the available field space at the time.

What a comeback!

In the rubber game of the series between South Salem and Sprague on April 28, Sprague led 8-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth. But by the end of the sixth, Sprague's lead had been cut to 8-7 in a game between the top two teams in the Central Valley Conference.

Sprague scored twice in the top of the seventh to extend it advantage to three. South Salem was down to its final two outs in the bottom of the seventh with none on, when the next seven Saxon hitters reached base, via four consecutive singles, an intentional walk, an old fashioned walk, and then a Braedy Vogt walk-off single for an 11-10 series-clinching victory. Wow!

Vogt was one of five South Salem hitters to notch two hits in the contest. He drove in three, as did Teagan Scott.

Anything you can do…

Roosevelt and Ida B. Wells played an eventful series the week starting April 25. It started with Wells’ lefty Griffin Scott tossing a no-hitter with 8 Ks in a 7-0 shutout win.

The Roughriders almost matched the feat the very next day, when senior pitcher Sol Scharp Salter threw a complete game shutout on 79 pitches. The righty had a no-hitter working with two outs in the seventh before losing it when Cam Hammer lined a single to left, but Roosevelt won, 5-0.

The rubber game three days later was close until Ida B. Wells pulled away after the fifth for an 11-5 win.

“Our team showed a lot of resolve by competing with a top-10 ranked team in the state and we feel as though we can compete with anybody,” said Roosevelt coach Daniel Stauffer.

Hollow way to end season

Dufur / South Wasco County had not been having a memorable season, but the Rangers’ junior catcher, Joey Holloway was. He was batting .792 (no typo), with three homers, with one series remaining versus Lyle / Klickitat / Wishram. Unfortunately, the Cougars ran out of sufficient players to field a team and had to forfeit, leaving Holloway two plate appearances short of the 40 needed to qualify for the batting average lead in the stat categories listed below.

News and notes…

Hood River Valley junior Grady Williams was a homer away from the cycle in a game versus Milwaukie on April 25…

Coquille senior RHP Dean Tucker threw a six-inning perfect game on April 22 against Lakeview, a game the Red Devils won 10-0.

Sheldon and South Medford split a double dip on April 29. Irish 3B John Mueller went 4-for-8 over the two games with two homers and a triple. Junior OH Nolan Miller hit a walk off home run in the ninth to lift Sheldon to the 10-8 win in the second game.

In a doubleheader with East Linn on April 28, Santiam senior 3B Logan Hays went 5-for-5 for the day, with two doubles, 4 runs scored and 5 RBIs.

Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian has quite a freshman in Tyson Smith. The righty threw a complete game with 19 strike outs versus Colton on April 26. AND he helped his own cause by going 4-5 with 6 RBIs!

La Salle Prep senior Finbar O’Brien, on April 19 versus Hillsboro, threw six scoreless with 9 Ks AND went 3-3 with a double and stolen base.

La Pine senior lefty Tyson Flack threw a five-inning perfect game on April 11 versus Harrisburg, a 14-0 win for the Hawks.
