It has been my absolute pleasure to cover the teams, players and coaches, and the sport itself, all season long. What a thrill ride it has been!
We are the champions!
Last Saturday, the OSAA and OnPoint Community Credit Union determined five state champions. Three were No. 1 seeds going into the playoffs. The other two were No. 2. In a sport where the best team doesn’t often win in a single elimination format, the top seeds held up remarkably well in 2023.
Saturday’s finals were each remarkable in their own way.
In the 6A final, No. 1 West Linn blanked No. 2 Jesuit, 2-0, despite managing just two hits off of Noble Meyer while striking out 14 times. Meyer, a tall right hander from the city of West Linn with a fastball close to 100 mph and a slider with a ridiculous spin rate, is expected to go top 10 in next month’s MLB draft. West Linn did just enough offensively and lefty Drake Gabel, the state’s ERA leader, did the rest in a route-going performance.

In the 5A final, No. 2 Thurston edged No. 4 West Albany, 2-1. West Albany might have won had Bryson Clifford not gunned down a Bulldog trying to score in the fourth inning. Instead, the game went into extra innings, where freshman Grady Saunders hit a walk off, inside the park home run for the Colts, getting under the relay home with a head first slide. Amazing!

In the 4A final, No. 1 Scappoose trailed No. 6 Pendleton, 2-1, after four innings before rallying to score four runs with two out and nobody on base in the bottom of the fifth. Scappoose walked it off one inning later by scoring seven without making an out in the 12-2, six-inning win.

In the 3A final, Wyatt Hesselman, the No. 2 pitcher at Banks, twirled a complete-game gem as the No. 2 Braves blanked No. 1 Cascade Christian, 3-0. Cascade Christian fell short in its quest to win the 3A football, boys basketball and baseball state titles in the same year.

In the 2A/1A final, No. 1 Kennedy completed a 31-0 season, matching the best season in Oregon playoff history, but dominating youthful Blanchet Catholic, 10-0, in six innings, to repeat as state champions. The Trojans finished second in the entire state in runs scored and first in the entire state in fewest runs allowed.

Mark Wiepert also had a good day for Wilsonville, going 2-2 with a stolen base. “All around it was a low-scoring game, but we were able to punch a few across off of costly mistakes by Mountain View, while we played a very clean defensive game,” noted Wilsonville coach Bryn Card.
No. 2 Thurston 4, No. 7 Lebanon 0 – Sophomore Connor Molony tossed a complete-game four-hitter, fanning 10, for the victorious Colts. Adam Elliott paced the offense with two hits, a run scored and one drive in. Matt Woodward had two hits, including a double, in the loss for Lebanon, last year’s 5A runner up.
4A

No. 5 La Grande 8, No. 4 North Marion / Gervais 6 – Noah McIlmoil’s two-run double in the top of the sixth broke a 6-6 tie and Sam Tsiatsos closed for La Grande, propelling the defending champions to the road win. North Marion came out swinging and scored four runs in the first and another run in the second. La Grande turned the game around with four in the fourth, highlighted by Jace Schow’s bases-clearing knock. “Good resilience by the boys,” said coach Parker McKinley. “Kept battling and responded well to a tough start.”
No. 6 Pendleton 13, No. 3 Marist Catholic 4 – Pendleton broke open a close game with a four-run fifth inning and won behind an 18-hit attack. Payton Lambert had three hits and four RBIs, Andrew Demianew added four hits and Clayson Cooley was 3-for-4for the victors. Biagi finished with two hits.
No. 2 Gladstone 4, No. 7 The Dalles 0 – Casey Allsop pitched 6.2 innings and held a potent Riverhawks offense to just three hits. Allsop helped his own cause with two RBIs, while he, Brycen Bryan, Ben Hoffman, Asher Gonzolez each had two hits. Brayde Owen chipped in with three hits and two steals.
3A
No. 1 Cascade Christian 9, No. 8 Sisters 2 – Cascade Christian scored runs in the first five innings and cruised to the convincing win at home. Owen Thompson pitched into the fifth and got the win for the Challengers. Ashton Moody and Cole Shields combined for four hits and five RBIs.
No. 4 Brookings-Harbor 8, No. 12 Pleasant Hill 2 – Pleasant Hill scored in the top of the first, but it was all BH after that. Kyle Burger went the distance for the Bruins, striking out eight while walking just one. Ethan Orman led the BH offense with two hits and two runs driven in. “Pleasant Hill barreled a lot of balls and is a hard-working team,” said coach Keith Wallin. “Nothing but respect.”
No. 3 South Umpqua 5, No. 6 Warrenton 4 (8 innings) – South Umpqua trailed, 4-1, heading to the bottom of the last, pushed across three runs, tying the game on a Kaden Graf two-RBI single, then walked it off in the bottom of the eighth. May 30 semifinals
6A
No. 1 West Linn 6, No. 4 Lake Oswego 4 – Jake Holmes made a great defensive play at first to save a run, then launched a two-run shot in the bottom of the first as part of a three-run frame that helped the defending champions to the home win. West Linn added three more runs in the bottom of the second, two on a hit from Baron Naone, and the Lions would have all the runs they needed, as Gabe Howard and Drake Gabel combined to keep the Lakers from getting more than two in the third and two in the fourth. Declan Francis and Brodie Heher had good moments at the plate for Lake Oswego in the loss.
No. 2 Jesuit 4, No. 6 North Medford 2 – A two-run home run from Levi Jones broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and propelled the Crusaders to their first championship game since 2019. Jeremiah Robbins’ two-run home run for the Black Tornado had even the score in the fourth inning. Noble Meyer went the final three innings on the hill for the Crusaders, allowing zero runs while fanning four. The senior got the win and also drove home a first-inning run with a sacrifice fly.
5A
No. 4 West Albany 5, No. 9 Ashland 4 – Ashland led 4-1 after 2.5 innings, but West Albany scored two in the bottom of the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth to take the lead. Evan Bliss went 6.2 innings for the win. Drew Rice got the final out for West Albany, which got big offensive days from Camden Johnson and Aiden Metzker. West Albany has never won a state title and will be playing for the championship for the first time in almost 20 years.
No. 2 Thurston 14, No. 3 Wilsonville 8 – Sophomore Connor Molony had four hits and five RBIs to lead the Colts, who were up by just two after four innings, but scored the game’s final four runs in the home win. Thurston will vie for its first title since 2009.
4A
No. 1 Scappoose 6, No. 5 La Grande 4 – The defending champs led 4-1 on the road, thanks to two hits and three RBIs from Sam Tsiatsos; before top-seeded Scappoose rallied with five unanswered to make the final for the first time since 2015. The Challengers will look for their first baseball state title since 2012 on Saturday.
No. 2 Banks 5, No. 3 South Umpqua 1 -- Logan Kind allowed four runners in the first, then shut down the Lancers the rest of the way on just one hit while fanning 14 as the Braves made the title tilt for the first time since winning 4A in 2019. Wyatt Hesselman’s second hit of the game, a two-out, two-strike grounder through the hole, drove home two in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie.
2A/1A
No. 1 Kennedy 7, No. 4 St. Paul 0 – Ethan Kleinschmit pitched a gem for the defending champion and undefeated Trojans, who knocked off St. Paul for the fourth time this season. Kleinschmit and Andrew Cuff combined for 14 Ks in the shutout win. Charlie Beyer had three hits and two RBIs to spark the offense. Owen Bruner added a triple and RBI. No. 3 Blanchet Catholic 9, No. 2 Umpqua Valley Christian 1 -- For the first time ever, the Blanchet baseball team will head to the state finals. Mitch Wort led the offensive onslaught for the Cavaliers with two hits and three RBIs. Tyson Smith and Drew Bartels also had two hits in the win.

St. Paul, the only 1A public school having consistent success in 2A/1A baseball, concluded a season where it had 21 wins, won its first-ever home playoff game and defeated vaunted Knappa to reach the semifinals. The Buckaroos lost only to two teams all season: 2A/1A champion Kennedy and 3A champion Banks.
It is a tradition at St. Paul that the seniors talk to the younger players at season’s end about the expectations for them going forward: to keep grinding and believe, before figuratively handing down the torch to them.
“It's a pretty cool thing,” said St. Paul coach Dwayne Nowlin.
