Down by six points, No. 2 Silverton found its groove in the third quarter against No. 1 Wilsonville in a highly anticipated 5A Special District 2 football game Friday night.

The host Foxes not only began to find the end zone, but their defense threw a blanket over dangerous Wildcats senior quarterback Mark Wiepert, who threw three touchdown passes in the first half.

Silverton scored 31 consecutive points and ran away for a 45-27 win that gives the Foxes (6-1, 3-0) sole possession of first place ahead of Wilsonville (5-2, 2-1) and Canby (3-4, 2-1).

“The first half, we were close on a lot of plays and we didn't make them,” Silverton coach Dan Lever said. “The message was, 'Hey guys, we've got to make them in the second half.' We did that and some in the second half.”

Senior quarterback Sawyer Teeney led the way, completing 18 of 26 passes for 347 yards and five touchdowns, two each to seniors Daniel Kuenzi and Hudson Waples and one to junior Sutton Kuenzi.

Sutton Kuenzi hauled in a 66-yard touchdown pass to pull the Foxes into a 20-20 tie, then caught a 44-yard pass to set up the go-ahead score, a 10-yard touchdown run by Teeney.

Daniel Kuenzi ran for a six-yard touchdown and caught a 22-yard scoring pass to make it 38-20 early in the fourth quarter. Teeney found Waples for a 26-yard touchdown as the lead grew to 45-20.

Wilsonville's Wiepert completed 17 of 41 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns (three to senior Nick Crowley) and ran for 52 yards. But Silverton's defensive front – led by seniors Eli Willis, Brash Henderson, Brody Kuenzi and Zavien Black – was able to apply consistent pressure in the second half.

“We forced some early decisions and finally sacked him,” Lever said. “Our kids just calmed down and honed in on their job.”

Teeney is having a big season, completing 72.9 percent of his passes for 1,623 yards and 19 touchdowns with one interception. The only interception came on a pass that tipped off a receiver's fingers.

“The kids call him 'Houdini Teeney,'” Lever said.

The Foxes have won four in a row since losing to 6A No. 3 Lake Oswego 42-13. In that game, they trailed 14-13 at half and Teeney exited early in the second half with a hip pointer.

Silverton's 24-21 win at Mountainside, which leads the 6A Metro League, and loss to Lake Oswego helped “shape who we are now,” according to Lever.

“The speed of the game against Mountainside and LO, I think we're still playing at that speed,” Lever said.

Cascade cruises

The return of junior star running back Bryce Kuenzi helped propel No. 1 Cascade to a 60-19 win over No. 2 Philomath as the unbeaten teams met in a 4A Oregon West Conference showdown Friday.

Kuenzi, who injured his knee in a win at No. 7 Stayton on Oct. 3 and missed last week's win over Junction City, rushed for 105 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries before leaving the game with the visiting Cougars ahead 40-12 at half.

“Bryce looked like himself,” Cascade coach Shane Hedrick said.

Kuenzi's presence also opened up opportunities for junior fullback Matt Hinkle, who had 11 carries for 190 yards and four touchdowns.

“Bryce being on the field just makes his teammates play better,” Hedrick said. “It puts the fear in the defense.”

The emergence of the 190-pound Hinkle, a standout wrestler, gives Cascade's rugged running game another dimension.

“He's the real deal, good golly,” Hedrick said. “He's got a great physical aspect to his body. It really complements what we're trying to do with our tailback. You need to have some dudes in the box to stop him. If not, he's kind of a man amongst boys.

“Losing Bryce for a week, it made us have to rethink our tools a little bit. That was a good awakening for us, like, hey, we've got some other kids on this team that can contribute.”

Friday's game matched Cascade's running game against Philomath's explosive passing game, led by senior quarterback Caleb Russell. The Warriors were within 16-12 after one quarter – Russell threw touchdown passes of 75 and 83 yards to junior Rocco De La Rosa – but the Cougars scored 24 consecutive points in the second quarter to lead 40-12.

Cascade rushed for 385 of its 404 yards. Russell completed 16 of 32 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions (by senior Hunter Anundi, sophomore Josiah Hawkins) but Philomath had minus-17 rushing yards.

“Our kids certainly got up for this one,” Hedrick said. “It's one that they take a lot of pride in.”

Cascade (7-0, 3-0) is tied for first place with No. 3 Marist Catholic (6-1, 3-0), ahead of Philomath (6-1, 2-1). Marist Catholic plays host to Cascade on Oct 25 and visits Philomath in the regular-season finale.

'On a different level'

The numbers keep piling for Hunter Vaughn and North Douglas offense.

Vaughn had another big game for the unbeaten Warriors (7-0, 6-0 Special District 1), ranked third in 1A-8, in a 66-6 home win over Prospect Charter/Butte Falls on Friday. The 6-1, 175-pound Vaughn rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries and caught an 18-yard scoring pass.

For the season, Vaughn has rushed for 1,540 yards and 27 touchdowns, averaging a whopping 27.0 yards per carry. He also has returned five kickoffs, three interceptions and three fumbles for scores and has one touchdown catch. That's 39 total touchdowns in seven games.

What's even more remarkable about Vaughn's numbers is only one of his 57 carries has come in the second half because North Douglas has been comfortably ahead.

JJ Mast, the North Douglas coach since 2012, said Vaughn is “all-around on a different level” than other players on the field. Vaughn has been clocked in the 40-yard dash in the high 4.4s and low 4.5s, according to Mast.

“I've not coached a player of Hunter's caliber,” Mast said of Vaughn, the school's all-time leading rusher. “He really has a different burst and a different gear than anyone else I've seen. He can go left and right as fast as anybody I've seen, and when he hits the open field, you are not going to catch him. He's just a very gifted athlete. And he's got the best hands on the team.”

Vaughn could threaten eight-man single-season state records for touchdowns (64, Tyler Harshfield, Wallowa, 2009) and points (424, Joe Griffin, Imbler, 2013). He is a threat to find the end zone on every play.

“He seems to find a way,” Mast said. “He'll make that cut back across the field and you're hollering, 'No, no. no.' And then it turns into, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah.'”

North Douglas, which finished 4-5 in 2A last season, has dominated in its move to eight-man. The Warriors are averaging 77.4 points per game, ahead of the state record of 72.8, set by Lowell in 2013.

Mast credited the line play of seniors Corbyn Schoonover (6-0, 205) and Kye Bilyeu (6-0, 195) and sophomore Brody Clark (5-8, 190).

“We're really good up front,” Mast said. “We were big the last couple years, averaged about 260 up there, and now we're about 200. But that's much better for eight-man.”

Wells runs over Lincoln

The Wells running game was supposed to face a stern challenge Friday against Lincoln in a key 6A Portland Interscholastic League game.

The visiting Cardinals were coming off back-to-back shutouts of Roosevelt and McDaniel and were allowing a meager 11.2 points per game.

But the first-place Guardians (5-2, 5-0) jumped all over Lincoln (4-3, 3-2) from the start, racing to a two-touchdown lead in the opening minutes, building it to 40-0 at half and coasting to a 46-16 win. Wells rushed for 317 yards in dispatching its rival.

“This whole year we were waiting for this game, every practice we were talking about it,” Guardians senior running back Cam Hammer told the Portland Tribune. “This game meant a lot to us. Lincoln hasn’t beat us in four years and for all the seniors playing, it’s been a lot of fun.”

Wells dominated the first half behind senior Wyatt Andler (14 carries, 125 yards, three touchdowns) and Hammer (six carries, 128 yards, one touchdown). Hammer also had a 23-yard touchdown catch from senior Spencer Reid on fourth-and-8.

“We told them to put them down, put them away early and they definitely put them away early,” Wells interim head coach Robby Scharf told the Portland Tribune. “Kids played great, Cam Hammer is continuing to prove he’s one of the fastest kids in the PIL … We’re peaking at the right time.”

Wells extended its league winning streak to 15. The Guardians hold a one-game lead over Jefferson (4-3, 4-1). The teams meet in the regular-season finale at Wells.

Churchill on top

Two of the state's most improved teams collided Friday with first place on the line in the 5A Midwestern League.

No. 5 Churchill (6-1, 6-0) moved to the top of the standings by pulling away in the second half for a 42-21 win at previously unbeaten Willamette (6-1, 5-1).

Senior Ceville Pasi rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries for the Lancers, who dominated after trailing 14-8 late in the second quarter.

"I just think it means we're on the right track," Churchill coach Layne Coffin told the Register-Guard. "I mean, there's a lot to do, but these kids work so hard, they believe and they're becoming tight-knit. I really haven't seen anything like it in many years.”

Willamette junior Maveryck Akers rushed for two touchdowns to put the Wolverines ahead 14-8. But Pasi's one-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion gave Churchill a 16-14 edge at half.

The Lancers expanded the lead early in the third quarter when junior Lucas Gansen threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Kingsli Roberts. The play sparked Churchill.

"It surprised me," Pasi told the Register-Guard. "We were all worried coming out of halftime but that really picked us up. It really gave us momentum and drive."

Both teams have done an about-face this season. Last year, Churchill finished 3-6 and Willamette was 0-9.

The Lancers, who ended Thurston's 42-game league winning streak Oct. 3, holds a one-game lead over Willamette and Thurston (6-1, 5-1) with two games remaining. Churchill can clinch an outright league title by defeating South Eugene (0-7, 0-6) and Eagle Point (1-6, 1-5).

Baker's Jones out

Baker was missing arguably the state's best receiver Friday when it lost to visiting Ontario 41-0 in a 4A Greater Oregon League game.

Junior Rasean Jones suffered a separated shoulder in the second half of last week's 43-6 loss at La Grande. His recovery time is estimated at six weeks, which means he is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

The 6-3, 205-pound Jones, who entered the season with college offers from Oregon State, Washington State and Boise State, was a bright spot in a tough season for the Bulldogs (1-6, 0-3). Through six games, he caught 57 passes for 882 yards and 11 touchdowns despite being the focus of opposing defenses.

“We were consistently seeing him getting double-teamed,” Baker coach Jason Ramos said of Jones, who also returned three kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns. “Basically a guy on him playing man, and then another guy just sitting over the top of him.

“We were getting creative with moving him around, moving him into the backfield and motioning him across the formation. A lot of that was fairly successful. We were still able to get the ball to him in different ways.”

Jones is big and physical and has elite speed. A two-time 4A champion in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, he posted the best times in the state for all classifications in both events last spring.

“He's a great route-runner,” Ramos said. “He's just a tough match-up for anybody. He's quick-twitch and he's got great breakaway speed. Even though we were seeing teams putting guys on him, it was still a tough match-up. He was having a great season.”

Jones is sure to get plenty of attention from colleges in the next year.

“This was going to be a big season for him, coming into his junior year,” Ramos said. “We suspect there's going to be other interest. He'll get some interest in track, but that's going to be later on.”

Baker has played its last two games without its starting quarterback, junior Jake McClaughry (1,089 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes), who broke his wrist in the first half of a 57-40 loss to Pendleton on Oct. 3. The Bulldogs, with only five seniors on their roster, are getting valuable experience for their young players.

“Our junior class is pretty solid and we've got some sophomore that have been playing,” Ramos said. “The silver lining is we were young to begin with, and we got younger.”
