In watching film leading up to a 4A Oregon West Conference football showdown with No. 1 Cascade on Friday, Marist Catholic coach Zach Loboy had a good feeling.

The way the No. 3 Spartans had been playing for the last month, he liked how they matched up with the Cougars.

“I thought we would probably take that team,” Loboy said.

But even Loboy said he couldn't have imagined what happened Friday. The Spartans (7-1, 4-0) didn't just beat Cascade (7-1, 3-1), they sent a message with a resounding 47-0 victory.

Senior Nick Hudson completed 16 of 28 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns, two to senior Aaron Bidwell (nine catches, 176 yards), and sophomore Conner Harvey rushed for 148 yards and three scores on 23 carries. Marist Catholic's defense, coming off a 35-0 win over co-No. 9 Stayton, smothered the Cougars, holding them to 101 total yards.

“I didn't realize it was going to get that out of hand," Loboy said.

To be fair, Cascade was shorthanded. Cougars coach Shane Hedrick said he was missing six key contributors.

“In my coaching career, I've never had this many injuries,” Hedrick said.

Cascade star junior running back Bryce Kuenzi, who injured his knee Oct. 3 against Stayton and returned to play the first half last week against No. 4 Philomath, was diagnosed with a torn ACL and is out for the season. Junior fullback Matt Hinkle, who rushed for 190 yards last week, was slowed by a high ankle sprain he suffered against Philomath and had one carry for two yards. And sophomore receiver Josiah Hawkins left in the second quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.

“Our offense is really built around Bryce,” Hedrick said. “All of the sudden you don't have the ability to run the ball that way.”

Loboy said that he believes Kuenzi is the best running back in 4A.

“But it wouldn't have made a difference," Loboy said. "We put it on them.”

Since a 19-16 loss to No. 2 Henley, Marist Catholic's defense has been outstanding, holding four of five opponents to seven points or fewer, including two shutouts.

“The defense has totally cranked it up,” Loboy said. “Our defensive line this year is so much better than it was last year. They're all a year older.”

Last season, when the Spartans were the 4A runners-up, their linebacker crew covered up for an inexperienced defensive line. This year, it's the opposite effect, according to Loboy.

Marist Catholic is getting stout play from senior defensive tackle Dawson Relling (6-3, 250), whose college offers now include Idaho, and senior nose guard Juan Pablo Nava Ramos (6-1, 290), who has improved immensely after being a football newcomer last year.

“All of the sudden we've got a couple of interior guys that really control the line of scrimmage,” Loboy said.

At defensive end, junior Jackson Skinner and senior Jackson Christian are much more effective at setting the edge than a year ago. In Friday's game, Skinner's strip-sack led to a 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown by senior Ryan Lemley.

Loboy sees the loss to Henley as a turning point.

“A lot of kids were riding that wave from last year, being in the championship game, getting their hearts broken,” Loboy said. “I think that loss woke some kids up that they needed to continue to press the dial and be better each week.”

'Big boys' drive Banks

After dropping from 4A to 3A in 2022, Banks instantly became the class of Special District 1, making back-to-back perfect runs through the league the last two seasons.

The only thing that has changed this season is the way the Braves are dominating. Rather than an aerial assault – like last year, when they threw 27 touchdown passes and finished as the state runners-up – they are steamrolling opponents with their running game.

On Friday, Banks (7-0, 5-0) rushed for 330 yards in clinching at least a share of its third consecutive district title Friday with a 54-12 road rout of Valley Catholic. Senior quarterback Lane Gilbert rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, also passing for two scores, and junior Jarrett Martin had five carries for 116 yards and one touchdown.

The Braves, tied with Vale for the No. 1 spot in the OSAAtoday 3A coaches poll, are averaging 222.4 rushing yards per game, accounting for 62.8 percent of their offense.

“I feel like we've kind of come into our own,” coach Cole Linehan said. “We have a different identity than we've had in years past.”

In last week's 43-18 win over Yamhill-Carlton, Banks rushed for a season-high 343 yards.

“I don't know that I've ever had a team that's done that,” Linehan said. “We knew what we had going into the season with the big boys up front, and they have just continued to improve. They have been the leaders on this team. When you have the horses up front, it makes for a fun year.”

The Braves are leaning on teams with their size. The offensive line features senior tackle Luke Bigsby (6-1, 275), junior tackle Cole Wilson (6-4, 230), sophomore guard Cade Wilson (6-3, 280), junior guard Carson McCutcheon (6-4, 240) and sophomore center Faber Herbst (5-8, 170).

“Physicality is something that we pride ourselves on, for sure,” Linehan said.

Bigsby, a fourth-year varsity player, was a 3A first-team offensive tackle and co-defensive lineman of the year in 2023. Bigsby, Cole Wilson and McCutcheon were offensive line starters last year, when Banks finished 12-1.

The Braves graduated quarterback Kade Long, but Gilbert moved from slot to take the position. He has passed for 924 yards and 14 touchdowns with three interceptions and rushed for a team-high 613 yards and 11 scores, averaging 10.0 yards per carry.

“He still runs like a running back or a slot that doesn't mind mixing it up,” Linehan said. “He does a really good job of reading blocks and reading defenses and knowing when to pull and when to give.”

Banks returned much of its team from last season and got a boost with the addition of Martin, a transfer from 2A Gaston. Martin has scored five touchdowns receiving and five rushing and has returned two punts and one interception for scores.

“Every time he touches the football, he might score,” Linehan said.

Glencoe legacy

A connection to its championship past has been a key factor this season in the success of Glencoe, which beat 35-16 on Friday to clinch at least a share of the 5A Special District 1 title.

Senior left tackle Brody Sahlfeld, the best player on the offensive line, is the son of Todd Sahlfeld, an all-state lineman and linebacker on Glencoe's 1986 state title team. Todd Sahlfeld went on to a standout defensive career at Oregon State and has been a mainstay on Glencoe's staff as the freshman coach.

The Crimson Tide (6-2, 6-0) run more than 70 percent of their plays behind the 6-4, 270-pound Brody, according to coach Ian Reynoso, who played guard at Oregon (2001-05).

“He's done some stuff these last couple of games that have just blown me away,” Reynoso said. “He's the best lineman that I've coached. He's just been taking kids five, 10 yards on average.”

Brody has been clearing a path for junior running back Daniel Heninger, who has rushed for 1,412 yards. Heninger ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries in Friday's win.

“If people are talking about Heninger being the offensive player of the year in our league, which I think is a solid conversation to have, I think Brody would deserve it more,” Reynoso said. “You could take any of the backs behind Brody and run for 1,500, 1,600 yards.”

Brody Sahlfeld isn't the only Glencoe legacy. The team has 14 sons of former players, including senior tight end/defensive end Camden Roofener, whose father, freshman assistant coach Jim Roofener, was the state defensive player of the year as a linebacker in 1991.

Heninger, a college prospect as a lacrosse player, played soccer until switching to football as a freshman. A 4.0 student and former chess champion, he is a savvy runner.

“He's a real calculated back,” Reynoso said. “He's a real intellectual kid. He understands how to use his body.”

Glencoe met OSAA criteria to drop to 5A after finishing 2-7 and 3-7 in 6A the last two seasons. The Crimson Tide has won its first league title since 2007, when it finished as the 5A runner-up.

“I wasn't looking to go 5A,” Reynoso said. “I thought we'd stay in 6A and have a pretty solid team. When the OSAA said we were on the list of invitees, I thought, 'Let's give it a shot.' It's put us in a favorable spot. It's been what we've been looking for as a program.”

West Linn rebounds

Two years ago, an early loss to Sheldon provided an impetus for West Linn's run to a 6A championship.

The No. 3 Lions, who suffered their first defeat of the season last week to No. 1 Lake Oswego, are hoping for a similar effect this season.

West Linn (7-1, 3-1) came out on fire Friday at co-No. 5 Tualatin (5-3, 1-3) and rolled to a 56-26 win. Junior Viggo Anderson rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and caught three passes for 103 yards for the Lions, who racked up 560 total yards.

“We've always said a team's best week of practice is the week after their first loss,” West Linn coach Jon Eagle said. “This week it was true for us.”

Senior quarterback Baird Gilroy completed 14 of 21 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns, two each to senior tight end Baron Naone and senior wideout Danny Wideman. The defense slowed BYU-bound Tualatin senior quarterback Nolan Keeney, who went 7 of 23 for 100 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Eagle said the key to West Linn's defense is the play of its cornerbacks, sophomore Josiah Molden and senior Xavier Harris. Their ability to lock down receivers shrinks the field for opposing offenses.

“They just go about their business and their guys hardly catch any passes,” Eagle said. “Maybe they don't get interceptions, but people don't throw their way because bad things happen when you do. Those guys in the middle make a lot of plays because we're able to man up people on the outside.”

Tualatin didn't have its best receiver in senior Zhaiel Smith, who was out with an ankle injury. The Lions were able to keep Keeney from escaping the pocket and hurting them with his legs.

“Our staff had a good plan,” Eagle said. “Keeney is very difficult to tackle in the open field.”

The 5-8, 170-pound Anderson, who has rushed for 878 yards this season, showed that he can be a weapon as a receiver, too.

“He is so difficult to tackle in space,” Eagle said. “He's so quick. Running between the tackles, he's not going to move the pile, but if we get him outside, he's pretty good. He just makes people miss. He's as good as I've ever seen.”

West Albany controls MWC

No. 7 West Albany clinched at least a share of the 5A Mid-Willamette Conference title by controlling the second half of a 34-20 win over No. 4 Dallas on Friday.

The Bulldogs (6-2, 4-0) hold a one-game lead over Dallas (7-1, 3-1) and Lebanon (6-2, 3-1). They can win the conference title outright by beating South Albany (4-4, 1-3) in the regular-season finale.

After Dallas took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by junior Hunter Rivers, it was all West Albany. Senior Tyler Hart-McNally scored on runs of 28, 22 and 25 yards as the Bulldogs opened a 34-20 lead by the end of the third quarter.

"We struggled in the first half, a lot of penalties,” said Hart-McNally, who rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. “We had a good meeting at halftime, figured everything out at halftime and took everything in that we saw. We needed to have a better mental game.”

Dallas, which won its previous six games by an average of 38.0 points, will try to bounce back from its first loss. The Dragons play host to Lebanon next week in a game that could decide second place.

“This could be working to our advantage if we handle it properly and we see all the small things,” Dallas coach Andy Jackson said. “We talk to our kids about the little details all the time, and the little details are what cost us the game.”

Dallas senior Sean Ward rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries.

Mountain View rallies past Summit

No. 3 Mountain View overcame a 14-point, first-half deficit to edge No. 9 Summit 28-27 in a first-place showdown Friday in the 5A Intermountain Conference.

Trailing 21-7 with four minutes left in the first half, the host Cougars got a 24-yard touchdown pass from senior Mason Chambers to senior Jack Foley before the half, then Chambers connected with junior Evan Worthington for a three-yard score early in the third quarter to tie 21-21.

“We don't put our head down,” Chambers told the Bend Bulletin. “We are resilient and we know what we are capable of doing.”

Junior Angel Valenzuela blocked a Summit field-goal attempt – the second block of the game for Mountain View – and sophomore Ryder Carpenter ran for a eight-yard touchdown to put the Cougars ahead 28-21.

Summit sophomore Andrew Guthrie answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior Dylan Hughes midway through the fourth quarter, but the Storm missed the extra-point attempt, leaving the score at 28-27. Mountain View ran out the clock to seal the win.

Chambers completed 19 of 25 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Foley had seven catches for 93 yards and one score.

Cougars coach Brian Crum praised his players for how they scratched out the victory.

“I will take these kids all the time,” Crum told the Bend Bulletin. “They are just tough and they don’t quit. There was not a lot of panic out of our kids or our coaches. At halftime I thought our coaches made some good adjustments and we went out and executed when we needed to.”

Summit rushed for 275 of its 375 yards, but the two missed field goals and one missed extra point proved costly.

With the win, Mountain View (8-0, 4-0) secured at least a share of the conference title, moving on top of Summit (4-4, 3-1) in the standings. The Cougars can claim the outright title with a win at No. 6 Bend (6-2, 2-2) in the final regular season game.

Record day

Falls City senior Chris Sickles had a performance for the ages Saturday to lead his team past host Gilchrist 53-27 in a 1A-6 nonleague game.

The 6-0, 180-pound Sickles rushed for a 1A-6 record 553 yards and seven touchdowns on 27 carries. He scored on runs of 52, 26, 11, 65, 54, 41 and 81 yards on his way to breaking the previous record of 512 yards, set by Cole Teel of Prairie City/Burnt River in 2022.
