La Grande effort at Sierra Nevada
Four Oregon teams, led by defending state 4A/3A/2A/1A champion La Grande, which finished second; placed among the top 20 teams at the 75-team Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno the last weekend in December.
Paige Allen won the 145-pound bracket for the Tigers. Lyndie Isaacson, a defending state champion, was second at 120.
Mountainside took ninth place. Layla Morris, a 6A/5A state champion last year at 115 pounds, won the 125-pound title by major decision over a Fargo National Champion from California. The Mavericks, who finished ninth in the state last year, put another wrestler, Addison Burleigh, in the finals at 135 and got a strong showing as well from Natalie Kawaguchi at 120 pounds. Kawaguchi, who went 5-2 in Reno, is a three-sport athlete who has earned First Team All-Metro League honors in soccer, wrestling, and softball.
Oakridge finished 15th, led by Kali Williams, who finished third at 135. Williams was a 4A/3A/2A/1A state champion last year at 130 pounds. Siuslaw was 19th. Macali Lade won the 115-ppound bracket.
Burns entered only two wrestlers, but one, Megan Weil, won the 190-pound bracket.
Podium for three Oregonian boys at Sierra Nevada
Devon Kerr of La Pine (144), Seth Wynn of Lebanon (157) and Owen Hull of Grants Pass (165) all won their brackets at the 96-team Sierra Nevada Classic, a strong showing for Oregon wrestlers in a tournament with representation from seven states, including Oklahoma.
Burns, Harrisburg and Lebanon all placed among the top 20 in the team chase. Easton Kemper was the Hilanders’ highest finisher, taking third at 190. Brody Buzzard (190) and Hunter Langham (285) were both runners up for Harrisburg.
Brash Henderson of Silverton (215) and Landyn Philpott of La Pine (150) also had strong showings.
Canby fills up Your Space Storage
Canby won the Your Space Storage Tournament hosted by McMinnville for the fourth consecutive season. Brady Froyd (138) and Matthew Young (150) won brackets for the Cougars, Trey Smith and Jacob Young each was a runner up and five others from Canby took third.
Cascade and Tillamook placed second and third in the team score. Cascade got a title from Hans Kamm at 144. Senior Jak Hopkes won at 126 for Tillamook.
West Linn split its squad between the Doc Buchanan in Clovis, California and Your Space. At McMinnville, Max Bell took the title at 1-6, while two-time state placer Lucas Gray made his long-awaited return to competition since getting injured in the semifinals at State last year. He placed second at 175.
Newport wrestled to 15th place. The Cubs got a fourth-place effort from sophomore Ivan Wagner at 138 pounds. Sophomore Evan Hernandez, wrestling at 132, won his first three matches by fall and took sixth in his bracket. 190-pounder Alex Colomo made news by pinning an opponent in a match he trailed by 14 points!
Celtic pride at Your Space Storage Girls
McNary won the 15-team McMinnville Your Space Storage Invitational at McMinnville on Jan. 3. Jessica Cottings, Marlina Martinez, and Cadence Fineran finished as individual champions. Izzy Hublitz, McKenna Unger, and Desiree Brown finished in second place.
Sophomore Dema Al Rubaye (155) and freshman Eliza Henderson (235) won brackets for second-place Aloha.
Canby tied for sixth, led by second-place finishers Emilia Ensrud (125) and Jazmine Evans (170). Kyra Blair and Clarisa Santiago Martinez each won their consolation brackets to pick up 3rd place finishes. Gabriella Unger finished 4th and Mollie Kivett injury defaulted to 6th place after sustaining a wrist injury.
Junior Camille Keck pinned her way to the 140-pound title for Newport. Mysti Ferguson (170) took third in her bracket, while Chloe Sacket finished on the podium for the first time this season, registering a fourth-place finish at 170.

The U.S. Army will, once again, be the presenting sponsor for the OSAA State Wrestling Championship.

McNary wrestled at the Southridge Invitational and placed second as a team. Luis Martinez Hernandez rattled off three dominating wins to finish first at 106. Derek Jones finished in second place at 120. David Ramirez Sierra, Christian Pineda, and Jesse Mendoza Falcon placed third in their respective weight classes.
“Hopefully creating some momentum for the second half of the season,” said coach Samuel Martin.

Imbler competed at the JOHI in Joseph, Oregon last weekend. Sophomore Evan Burns won at 106 pounds and improved to 10-1 on the season. He is undefeated against Oregon competition so far this year. For winning JOHI, Burns received a beautiful bracket board with a Moncrief print of a cougar stalking two mule deer.

Returning state champion Isabel Herring of Cleveland won her third tournament of the year by taking first at 155 at the Lady White Buffalo Invitational.

Sam Medford shined at the Jeff Zerba Classic, a tournament named after the recently-retired, legendary Cleveland coach. Medford not only won his bracket at 132 pounds; he scored the most points (takedowns, near falls, reversals) to win the Art Hobley Award!

West Linn sent six boys to the Doc Buchanan Tournament in Clovis this past weekend. The Doc B is considered the most prestigious high school folkstyle tournament west of the Mississippi. Ryder Sprague and Michael Smith turned in strong performances by getting two wins each at the tournament. Two years ago, Lion Justin Rademacher (now at Oregon State) won his bracket at Doc B to secure the coveted cowboy hat!

Harrisburg’s girls’ team won the Pape Linn County Championships for the first time. Individual champions were Eden Ridgley (100), Gracie Williams (105), Paxton Steele (110), Lily Ridgley (130), Lynda Seehafer (135) and Kenadee Hunter (145). The Eagles have now won three tournaments this season.
