The undefeateds? Two survive the regular season
In last week’s Notebook, we reported that the OSAA’s three still-unbeaten teams were each staring down a gauntlet in the last week of the regular season.
Two, South Salem and Wilsonville, survived. Blanchet Catholic did not.
South Salem won three times last week to finish off the regular season 27-0.
The Saxons, however, were on the verge of tasting defeat in Game 2 of their Wednesday doubleheader versus Grants Pass. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Grants Pass hurler Cameron Holland quickly got a pair of outs and needed just one more to snap South Salem’s winning streak. Pinch hitter Kellen Bowman kept the inning alive with a two-out double. Teagan Scott followed with a double of his own to plate Bowman and cut the deficit to 3-2. That brought up junior SS Sawyer Nelson, who fell behind 1-2. Six pitches later – two balls and four foul offs -- Nelson launched a moonshot to straightaway centerfield for a walk-off, two-run homerun to keep the Saxons’ perfect season alive.
South Salem, the No. 1 seed in 6A, opened the playoffs yesterday with an 8-3 win over Beaverton.
Wilsonville also won three times against conference opponents. The Wildcats dominated the No. 3 team from the NWOC, La Salle Prep, on Tuesday, then won close contests over Canby, the No. 2 team; 3-0 and 6-2, on Thursday and Friday. Wilsonville (27-0) will open the 5A playoffs today versus Churchill as the No. 1 seed.
Blanchet Catholic was 25-0 after Tuesday’s 15-4 win over St. Paul and held the distinction of having both scored more runs and yielded fewer runs than any other team in the OSAA. The Cavaliers, ranked No. 1 in 3A, could not complete their unbeaten season, as they lost both ends of a Thursday doubleheader to Marist Catholic, the No. 1 team in 4A, 9-3 and 14-6.
In both games, Marist Catholic jumped on Blanchet early, scoring four runs in the first and three in the second. That deficit proved impossible for the Cavaliers to overcome.
Gianni Lombardi starred at the plate for Marist, hitting a three-run homer in the first inning of Game 1 and adding a home run in Game 2 as well. Cash Andrus had two hits in each game and Raith Huffman had a Game 2 home run after pitching four innings in Game 1.
Drew Bartels threw six innings and had two hits for BC in Game 1. Dylan Cuff and Noah Hanock both homered for the Cavaliers in the second.
The losses are not expected to bother Blanchet Catholic and its 11 seniors at all when the Cavaliers get their post-season started tomorrow at home versus Yamhill-Carlton. First-year head coach Jason Black will see to that.
“I have been teaching these players in the program that we need to focus on one thing - that one thing is the game we are currently playing and to compete at the highest level,” Black explained. “It does not matter who it is, their ranking, or classification. There will always be pressure. We have three ways to handle it - hide, run away, or fight for what we want. This team is full of fighters. They will come into every game ready to compete. They will always leave what they got on the field, doesn’t matter the outcome.”
Parr for the course
Hood River Valley won its final regular season game on Friday, thanks to a grand slam from senior Davis Parr in the top of the seventh inning, which broke a 2-2 tie with Centennial.
“It was a great way to send us into the playoffs for the 11th time in 12 years (not counting COVID year),” said HRV coach Max Reitz. “Davis Parr has been a three-sport athlete for all four years here at Hood River and it was a really cool way for him to wrap up his regular season high school career.”
The Eagles (15-11) travel to Summit today to take on the fifth-seeded Storm in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
We are [Play]off!
The OSAA post-season began yesterday with 16 games, involving all qualified teams, in 6A, and matchups between lower-seeded teams in 3A and 2A/1A. You can find recaps of most of the action here: https://www.osaa.org/today/article/4384/view?title=2025+baseball+playoff+recaps%3A+May+26
It is notable that, in 6A, the higher-seeded team won 15 of the 16 games.
That is not typical.
Last year and the year before, five lower-seeded teams won first-round games. In 2022, that number was three.
In baseball’s single-elimination format, the best team doesn’t always win a game and often doesn’t win the four or five necessary to hoist the state championship trophy. A hot pitcher, a few too many “at-em” balls, a late-inning miscue…all can dash dreams of glory in the span of just a few innings.
That’s what makes West Linn’s run of three straight titles in 6A, Thurston’s two straight in 5A and Scappoose’s two straight in 4A so remarkable, and unusual.
It’s also what makes home teams winning 15 of 16 in 6A so unusual.
Indeed, in the one game that home team did not win, No. 15 Ida B. Wells led No. 18 South Medford, 2-0, heading to the top of the seventh before the Panthers plated three and went on to win. It easily could have been 16-for-16!
***
All five defending champions have a great chance to win again in 2025, though only Umpqua Valley Christian in 2A/1A is a No. 1 seed. West Linn and Thurston are No 2 seeds in 6A and 5A, respectively. Scappoose and Warrenton are No. 3 seeds in 4A and 3A, respectively.
As stated previously, South Salem, Wilsonville, Marist Catholic and Blanchet Catholic are the top seeds in 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A, respectively. South Salem won yesterday, Wilsonville and Marist host games today. Warrenton and UVC host Round 2 games tomorrow.
***
Yesterday: First round in 6A, 3A and 2A/1A
Today: First-round in 5A and 4A
Tomorrow: Second round in 6A, 3A and 2A/1A (except West Linn/South Medford, which was moved to Thursday to accommodate South Medford’s HS graduation)
Friday: all quarterfinals
June 3: all semifinals
June 7: all championship games
News & notes
The Metro League has announced its All-League teams, as well as its superlatives. Jesuit had the Coach of the Year (Colin Griffin) and Player of the Year (Kainoa Santiago). Sunset’s Kruz Schoolcraft was Pitcher of the Year.

Crater senior RHP Tanner Keith tossed a five-inning no-hitter on Thursday in a shutout of Springfield as part of a regular-season-ending doubleheader. The Comets open the 5A playoffs at home today versus West Albany, the 5A runner up the past two seasons.

Grant beat Ida B. Wells twice to end the PIL season. The Generals are City champs for 2025 after finishing third last year behind Lincoln and Wells.
Jinki Tomita and Cooper Yudhishthu excelled on the mound for Grant in those two games, played on May 16 and 19. Grant hit five homers in the May 19 win, including two by Kaeden Cruise. The Generals kept up their home run barrage, belting four in yesterday’s playoff win over Forest Grove.
Stats categories
We continue our rundown this week of those Oregon ballplayers putting up numbers on diamonds around the state.
The information below comes exclusively from baseball coaches. Baseball coaches who have not contributed to the lists below, but have players who qualify, may contact John Tawa at [email protected] to learn how to get their players on these lists.
Note that yesterday’s holiday made it challenging for many coaches to get their information in by this morning’s deadline. That’s why you see so many asterisks this week, though the thresholds to qualify in any category did not change. An asterisk means that the player qualifies given the current thresholds, but that we lack up-to-date information on the player.
