BASKETBALL RULES CHANGE RELATING TO COURT MARKINGS
Schools are alerted to the fact that the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee adopted a rule change that will affect free throw activity.  This change, which begins with the 2008-09 season, will require new court markings along the free throw lane.  Many schools already have these lane markings in place on your court and gym floor tape is always an option in marking them.  Schools can view the new basketball court diagram at http://www.nfhs.org/core/contentmanager/uploads/2008_court_with_new_marks.pdf and other adopted rule changes at http://www.nfhs.org/web/2006/08/basketball.aspx.    New Rule:  During a free throw, all players will move up one lane space, leaving the two marked lane spaces closest to the end line vacant. A new mark (2 inches by 8 inches) must be applied to the lane line near the free-throw line to designate the last 3-foot marked lane space.
