As a freshman in 2022, Campbell Brintnall couldn't help but be awestruck while competing against Oregon City's Harley Daniel, one of the state's all-time great high school hurdlers.

“I remember thinking, 'Wow, when my senior year comes around, I want to be the next Harley Daniel,'” Brintnall said. “As cringy as that sounds, that was very inspiring to me as an athlete, just watching someone be so talented.”

Three years later, the Tualatin senior belongs in the same elite company. In fact, last week, Brintnall broke Daniel's Three Rivers League district meet record in the 100-meter hurdles.

“That's crazy to me when I think about it,” Brintnall said. “Like, I'm doing the thing that I wanted to do all along. I'm starting to get places where I wanted to go.”

Friday and Saturday, Brintnall hopes to add an exclamation point to a brilliant breakout season when she competes in the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 6A track championships at Hayward Field. Holding state-leading times in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, she is among a handful of athletes looking to make a mark on the state's all-time lists.

By running the 300 hurdles in 42.12 seconds at the district meet, Brintnall passed Daniel (42.23) and moved to No. 2 in state history, behind only Lake Oswego's Josie Donelson (41.70, 2024). Brintnall stands No. 3 in the 100 hurdles at 14.02, trailing Lincoln's Bianca Mathabane (13.57, 2006) and Daniel (13.95, 2022).

The 300 state record is within reach for Brintnall, and she isn't shy about reaching for it.

“That would be the goal, for sure,” she said. “That would be amazing.”

Tualatin coach Hashim Hall, who coaches Brintnall year-round in his Inner Circle Track Club, said Brintnall “will put her best foot forward” in pursuit of the record.

“If that means 41.6, then she'll be ecstatic,” Hall said. “If that means 41.8 or whatever, I might have to remind her that she should be proud of it. She's going to go for it. She's going to 100 percent put it out there and see what she can do.”

A year ago – when her best times were 45.24 in the 300 hurdles and 15.42 in the 100 hurdles – it seemed inconceivable that Brintnall would entertain such a lofty goal. She had a disappointing 6A meet, running 48.11 in the 300 finals (eighth place) and tripping in the 100 finals to finish in 17.13 (seventh place).

“It was very crushing to me,” Brintnall said. “Most of my junior year was very hard mentally. The marks I put up, I was never really happy with them.”

Despite the improvement Brintnall made as a junior, she was in no mood to celebrate it, according to Hall.

“She looked at me and said, 'I'm not happy,'” Hall said. “Because in her brain, she's the best in the state at that time, but reality showed that she was not. She's a very motivated person, and aware of her potential and if she's reaching it. She wanted so much more.”

Brintnall went to work in the offseason, refining her technique and increasing her commitment to weight training. The results are obvious on her 5-foot-10 frame.

“When people get next to her, they can see all the work in the weight room chiseled on her,” Hall said. “That's an awesome badge for her to have. She's strong, and it's starting to really connect with her technique and her speed.”

Brintnall opened the season by running a personal-best 14.58 in the 100 hurdles in the Oregon Relays, kicking off a steady stream of PRs. The improvement in both races carried all the way through to the district meet.

“I wouldn't have expected this big of a leap in my times,” Brintnall said. “Coach Hall has a big belief in me, what he sees in my potential. I just started to believe in that myself.”

In the state meet, Brintnall will continue her season-long duel with Wells senior Avery Coker, the two-time reigning champion in the 100 hurdles.

In their three races in the 100 hurdles, Coker won by .02 and .01 and Brintnall won by .11. In the 300 hurdles, Coker won the first race by .12 but Brintnall has dominated the last two meetings by 2.52 and 1.55.

“It's been very fun to be able to compete against her,” Brintnall said. “I feel like it's pushed both of us to better times. I respect her a lot as an athlete.”

Brintnall, who played youth lacrosse and didn't start hurdling until she was a freshman at Lakeridge, is just getting warmed up in her track career. Colleges are showing interest, and with her student profile – she has a 4.45 weighted GPA, plays the cello and is president of the Tualatin's Black Student Union – she has wide-ranging appeal.

“I'm still talking to some schools,” said Brintnall, whose mother, Trysha, named her after former football great Earl Campbell. “I really just want a good community, a place to grow, amazing coaches. Options are still open, for sure.”

Before turning her focus to college, though, Brintnall is hoping to end her outstanding senior season in style.

“I'm very happy. Not satisfied yet, but I'm very happy,” she said. “The last couple weeks, it's been crazy to me. The story of my season compared to last year is very different. Going into state this year, I have a lot higher expectations.”

Record watch

Besides Brintnall, several other athletes will be chasing records at the state meet.

Churchill junior Addison Kleinke will try to add to her state record in the pole vault. She cleared 14 feet, 0 ¾ inches this season, the No. 4 mark in the nation.

Lakeridge senior Chloe Huyler ran the 3,000 in 9:17.85 this season, No. 2 all-time behind Lake Oswego's Kate Peters (9:15.14, 2022). Newberg junior Sophia Castaneda has run the 400 in 53.62, the second-fastest time in state history to Lake Oswego's Josie Donelson (52.83, 2024).

Westview junior Saskia Dorf is close to the state mark in the triple jump. She has leaped 40-10, second only to McDaniel's Maleigha Canaday-Elliott (41-2 ¼), 2024).

On the boys side, Oregon City enters after setting the state record in the 4x100 relay in the Three Rivers League district meet. The team of senior Easton Hunt, junior Chase Borden, sophomore Colin Smith and senior Keaton Moore timed 41.00.

Crater's dynamic distance duo of seniors Josish Tostenson and Tayvon Kitchen set state records this season in the 1,500 (3:40.06) and 3,000 (8:01.56), respectively. Kitchen also is second all-time in the 1,500 at 3:41.62.

Jesuit senior Grant Valley ran the 200 in 20.86 this season – faster than the state record of 21.03 (Micah Williams, Benson, 2019) – but the race did not have a wind gauge. Valley ran 21.16 at the Metro League district meet, No. 3 all-time.

Baker junior Rasean Jones clocked 13.96 in the 110 hurdles last year, No. 3 all-time and pushing the long-standing record of David Douglas' Bob Gray (13.73, 1988). Jones' best time this season is 14.02.

The 6A, 5A and 4A girls and boys meets are Friday and Saturday at Hayward Field. The 3A, 2A and 1A meets are Thursday and Friday at Hayward Field.
